Members Rolos
I've been looking to buy my first fretless and I noticed something a bit preoccupying in some of the pics of the instrument that interested me, but since I'm evidently imbued with a hefty dosage of ignorance when it comes to fretless basses (but not limited to), I'm not sure if it's normal or not. I'm talking about the marks left by the strings (which look like roundwounds) on the fretboard. Is it real damage or is it nothing to worry about? Thanks in advance for whatever wisdom is shared with me.
Members bnyswonger
Fretless is my main axe. I use recycled SS rounds on mine - a relatively abrasive string - and I have my board dressed by a real good luthier every 2-3years.
Members Rolos
So the kind of thing in the pics is completely normal/reversible?
Members Thumper
+1 on dressing the board. It's not difficult, especially if you get a radiused sanding block from Stewmac or suchlike.
Members Crescent Seven
So the kind of thing in the pics is completely normal/reversible? It's normal if you use roundwounds on them, yes. But if you take care of the fretboard, it's generally not problematic. Some guys put epoxy on the fretboard to protect it.Also, you usually don't need to press quite as hard on a fretless, so unless you're choking the neck out, or doing massive unibends, it's not that big of a deal. If you use flatwounds, it's not an issue at all.C7
Members J-chot
aren't you supposed to use flat-wounds on a fretless?
