[rant]

Jesus. So it isn't perfect. It's a far cry from Justice and anything before it. But overall I like the direction on this cd. I like the aggression. I like Kirk's guitar solos. I like that overall this is a much better cd than anything they've done in recent years. But damn people need a reason to bitch, don't they? I am convinced that if Metallica were a new band right now, they could release Kill 'Em All next week and people would still piss and moan about it. "The production sucks" or "the songs are too long" or "I don't like the vocals". It's metal-not rocket science. Why the need to dissect it like this? Enjoy it or don't. Sheesh.

FYI-this rant isn't directed at anyone in this thread, just the "aficionados" that felt the need to examine this stuff with a fine-toothed comb. If you hate the album so much and are so starved for good metal, pick up the new Testament cd Formation of Damnation or Exodus' The Atrocity Exhibition-Exhibit A or even the new Evergrey cd, Torn. {censored}.

To be fair, I looked at the article as less of a critique of Metallica than the industry in general. I know the link attacks this album/Metallica/Rubin in general, but there is a good point.

The music industry as a whole has been putting out music which has been tweaked, compressed, altered, to be 'louder'. So it 'pop's out of ipod headphones, laptop speakers, etc. All at the expense of the music's dynamic range. Instead of softs and louds, all you get is shades of loud.

When you listen to such albums through a decent system/headphones it gets really grating, it feels like an aural assault . It really bugs me. It just so happens that this Metallica album is the newest in the trend, and appears to be the 'loudest' album ever released, or at least major album.

It has nothing to do with songwriting, or their style. I just consider it a poor decision in terms of production. I want some fidelity back in my music.

I see your point. But I listened to the heyday of thrash and there was some stuff that was seriously worse than this production-wise, so maybe I'm a little numb to it. I own quite a few cd's where the production seems rather a bit over-the-top like Death Magnetic is. Where it's produced just to be "louder". In those cases, the volume knob works wonders. :D;)

I just think it's a minor gripe and feels like people looking for something to be wrong with it, when as you stated, it's more the industry than pointing a finger specifically at Rubin/the Met boys.

People are overreacting, imho.

The problem with youtube is that the audio/video are inherently compressed to go online... I'm sure the difference may be shown a little bit in the video, but it would be much more desirable to compare with CDs.

That being said, I can't watch the videos as my crazy Nunavut internet won't let me but the thought of using youtube to compare compression seems fundamentally flawed to me. Just my two cents.

+ infinity squared.

YouTube compresses the {censored} out of everything, so it is pointless to pay any attention to audio quality when listening to youtube.

My only gripe with the Metallica album is that James still thinks he can sing. Go back to barking lyrics, it was much better that way. The production values are atrocious, but that has more to do with the producer, engineer, and mastering engineer than the band. Of course, I'm not really a Metallica fan, so what I think probably doesn't matter. I wouldn't be buying the album regardless.
