would you pre-order a cd from a local band?

so here's the deal, my band is low on funds to put out our record, so what we were thinking what have a pre-order, and if you purchase a pre-order we give you a "discount card" that entitles you to discounts on merch, such as if shirts are 15, you get it for 12.

as a fan would you purchase this? my band has a pretty solid amount of credibility in the scene, to the point where if we took every offer we got we'd be playing 12 to 15 shows a month.

thoughts?

How many CDs are you making?

When I put mine out, I had a friend who is a little more flush than I underwrite manufacturing, and he got paid back first. He got credit as "executive producer"...that generally means the money guy.

I would strongly advise you to not make more than you know you can sell - you can always do a re-order.

It would have to be a damned sweet band that I was very close with and trusted as friends.

Don't release an album, dude. It's a rarity that they are ever a fruitful venture these days. Do you have the stuff recorded? Do a long EP...do 2 EPs. There are companies that do short-run pressing now, too. It'll cost you more per CD, but you won't have boxes and boxes of CDs in your basement when your band breaks up in 8 months.

I'm obviously being optimistic here. ;)

we're going to do a run of 100 discs, and put our stuff up through iTunes and such. we've all made the mistake of having boxes and boxes of CD from past bands, and we thought 100 would be a good run to see how they sell. I"m sure we can burn through them between friends, family and fans... but we have no intentions of doing a huge run.

it is in the process of recording, we have a fan who offered to do some demos for us at IPR, and low and behold he turned out some really good songs. Essentially he is starting his own studio, so we get a really sweet deal on recording, and he gets to use our name, and use us as guenie pig clients. (thus far he's pretty cool in my book, offers suggestions, and takes them, and is willing to experiment.) oh yea, and I could hear my bass on the rough mix! how many times is the bass undermixed on rookie recordings?

Hey nothing personal, I didnt even hear your band... was just a generalization.

And as we know, all generalizations are wrong.

:D

oh no, i didn't take it that way at all, and i think your generalization is correct in every music scene, the majority of the bands aren't that great, or are just copying some other band that isn't very original either. do we need another bar rock band that sounds like Nickleback? Nope... i don't think so!

I've sold through half of a run of 1000 on my solo disc, but I've been pretty fortunate.

When the next project up (Tickled Pink) does one, we'll probably just do one or two hundred..and re-order if need be.

That's pretty darn good in my book! If you can sell 200 cd's on your own I think that's outstanding, but 500, I tip my hat to you sir!

What do you think about the aspect of having a "discount card" We play for a pretty broad age spectrum, one week we could be at a skatepark, the next we could be at a bar.

I'm curious as to what you guys think.

If you have a decent following (and it sounds like you do) it might not be a bad idea. Can't say that I have ever seen it done, but maybe you guys could end up being the trail blazers! :)

What are the discounts for? Entry, merch, CDs?

No.

My sister pre-ordered an album from her favourite local band last year, and despite numerous reassuring emails that she'd get it - she never did.

This is why I never would.

I did preorder STFF's CD before it came out... but it was already recorded and off to the printers. I wouldn't invest financially in a band that I don't know at all or at least really good. Because that's what this is... it's selling shares in a band to help fund a future product that they'll hoepfully stay together long enough to bring to fruition.

the idea is if you pre-order the cd, you get a card, this card is individual so people don't go to kinkos and go nuts... but the card will get you a discount on merch, i.e. if a shirt is 15 dollars, you get it for 12, free buttons and stickers, things like that. the card is good upon time of pre-order so you can start using it right away.

more or less you'll get the cd, and then perks there after.

the card will never expire as well, and if you lose it one can be reissued to you.

We're kind of wondering if this works would other bands hop on board and try it. It's a nice way to raise money, and give something back for people for helping you release your record.

this is where the discount comes in handy, it provides something with an instant discount. it was our way of trying to take the sting out of the risk.

but you hit the nail on the head!

I don't think much of it, frankly. I know personally that I hate carrying that kind of junk around in my wallet.
