Members georgestrings
I picked up an older Spector Q5 today, to replace the Stiletto Elite-5 I returned... I *think* it's an early one, as the serial # is only 5 digits, and my other one has an 8 digit #... .. It's got a photoflame top like my other Q5, only this one is a really dark red - almost like a black cherry... It's also in better condition than the other one - both cosmetically, and neck/fret-wise... Instead of having vol/blend/bass treble for controls, this one has vol/vol/bass/treble controls - but still sounded very good in the store... Both volume pots were noisey, and so was the output jack - so I got Daddy's to toss in new pots and a new jack - and I'll replace them myself... After this post, I'm gonna start cleaning 'er up - I'll mask off the fretboard, polish/clean the frets with #0000 steel wool, then polish the body with some wax that also buffs out scratches, clean up the bridge, pups, headstock, tuners, neck, and oil the fretboard lightly... I usually put a little additional foam under the pups to insure that I can raise them as much as I want to... After all that, I'll put on new strings, and start working on the set-up and intonation - this one's gonna be pretty easy, as the action was good with old strings on it...Lastly, I'll fix any electronic woes, and set the pup height... Maybe sometime tomorrow, I'll post pics of both Q5s - old and new, blue and red... I paid $300 out the door, btw... - georgestrings

Members willsellout
you could probably just do some contact cleaner for the pots instead of replacing them right? Or is there something deeper going on?
Members Incubitabus
well then... until tomorrow, it doesn't exist.

Preliminary findings indicate that this one will do atleast as well... As for the one off ebay - I wouldn't want to buy an instrument without playing it 1st, unless it came from a trusted source... - georgestrings

Or is there something deeper going on? Nothing deeper going on, it's just that those pots were really bad, and since I got Daddys to throw them in along with the jack, I figured I'd toss 'em in while I was replacing the jack... I might've been able to skate by blasting out the pots with some Funk Out, but I figured I'd just put the new ones in and be done with it... Besides, I've got a gig next saturday, and I'll probably use it atleast a little - I wouldn't want any problems... Thanks for the suggestion, though... Everything's working well now, after a couple of hours of work - and it cleaned up very well... I've only played it through my Pandora, but it sounded pretty good that way - tomorrow, I'll run it through an amp... - georgestrings

Members bassesofalessergod
to me this is pretty much the be all end all of basses, yu can't do much better on a four string: oddly enough, out of the dozens of basses i have owned over the years i have never owned a spector. i think i've owned a bass by every major manufacturer (except warwick!!!) but never a spector

Thanks - I took some pics this morning, but they were awfully dark and didn't show much detail at all... I think I'll take some outdoors after lunch, and if they turn out good enough I'll upload them to a host, and post 'em... - georgestrings

Members hawkhuff
Nice bass you got there, especially for the price. I have the six string version of that one and yes, it is quilted maple and black. Nice tone great action. Definitely worth the $$.

Members georgestrings
Thanks for the kind works, everyone - I won't know 'til my next rehearsal(Tuesday), but I suspect "Red" might become #1 5er after that... It plays just as well as "Blue", is in much better condition - despite being older - and has a wider range of tone, while keeping the strong clear mids that make my 1st Q5 such a winner in a band mix... Although you can't really see it in the pics, it has a nice black cherry quilted top, and is in really good condition... - georgestrings
