Hey guys, I usually post in the amps/electric guitar forums, but this is my first post here. Anyways, been playin guitar for about 6 years now and am going to get a bass rig to have at my home to full around with and so that when my bassist comes over he has something to play on and we can jam. Im also doing it to write some music and to just have fun. Anyways, heres what Im looking at getting:

what do you think? I work at a guitar store and I can get most stuff close to cost. We are the biggest independant dealer on the east coast and carry a lot of product including mesa, ibanez, hartke, ampeg, fender, gibson, roscoe, etc. let me know what you think

oh, and I play rock and metal and want to keep it down to 4 strings. My favorite bass player is steve harris

this head

on this cab

with this bass

That would be an injustice to the bass, to be honest.

I've never played that head, but given my experience with Avatar cabinets and the OP's budget, he could afford to do better. A decent bass with a great amp is going to sound a lot better than a great bass through a poor amp.

Just IME and IMO.

(And the SR5 is out since the OP mentioned he wants 4-strings only. ;))

how do you figure?

See my edit.

It is generally unwise to spend a bunch of money on one part of your rig to the disservice of the other parts.

And I agree with Catphish-you'll get a lot more for your money on the used market, especially with things as bad as they are.

I was actually trying to think of that bass the other day... I started a thread here on it :D

If you're budget is... Well, anything, Hartke shouldn't really be an option. ESPECIALLY if it's a good sum of money, which yours definitely is.

If you can get some Mesa at cost get yourself a 2x12... mmm! There's a lot of stuff that will work for rock, but generally Hartke is quite disliked around these parts.

I mean I get new stuff at cost, might as well go that route. If not Hartke, then how about a mesa carbine, but still use the Hartke cab. My understanding is that those things are tanks

the aluminum cones are far different from your common paper ones, how they differ, im still not entirely sure

The cones are different because they're made of aluminum.

On a serious note, as a result of their construction, the cones are stiffer than the comparable paper cone. As a result, they seem to reproduce more treble content when compared to paper cones. I've actually played that exact rig and the sound was pretty good. I was surprised, although I still like my GK head better.

A 1001RB-II through one of the new HyDrive cabinets would probably sound pretty damn good. :)

Ive been jammin on it at work and I like it a lot.

That's the only thing that really matters, bass wise. If it feels good in your hands, get it. The amp however, I'd say try to the Mesa Carbine that you were asking about. Mesa seems to be a very reliable company when it comes to the quality of their build, and customer satisfaction. If you can find one, try to get a Mesa Bass 400 or 400+, king of bass amps

i've played through Hartke on a couple of occasions. i could never get any kind of decent tone out of one.

look for a GallienKruger 800RB. they can be had for about $400 used and are workhorses. they were the standard for bassists for many years.

for a cab, you need to decide what kind of tone you want.

do you want the bigass bottom of a 2x15, or the tighter punch of 10 inch speakers.

does your band downtune?

are you looking for portability?

Why would the OP buy an Avatar when he can buy product at cost in his own store?

I can't comment on the Hartke amp, but I used a Hartke 410XL for almost 20 years. The XL series cabs really are well built. Aluminum cones have really gone out of favour though. If you like the tone of them, then get them.

Unless you are really gung-ho for Hartke sound, I would stay away. Their durability has been questionable. I've personally had plenty of trouble with their gear, and I know many other people who have had issues as well.

You've got a hell of a budget. Take your time and try out as many basses, amps, and cabs as possible.

My personally recommendations for things to check out:

Basses: G&L, Spector, Musicman

Amps: GK, Mesa, Markbass, older Ampeg (their new stuff has been getting very spotty reviews)

Cabinets: Eden, SWR, Mesa

Hotblack is right on Hartke's durability, as I have experienced their crappyness firsthand. Go for SWR, a red-head combo or 350x. You get the tube and the reliability.

If he's playing the sort of music I think he is, that setup will be heavily outgunned.

SWR sounds nice, but you're not going to keep up with a metal band playing through a Redhead.
