Members jonathan_matos5
i have an odd idea involving my ehx bassballs a plunger mute and some distortion. im thinking ill need a lot of stuff to not get residual sound from the horn before the effects. or perhaps just a mike and some software. Members hi.flyer
Yea, try one of those 'silent brass' things that's like, a mute w/ a mic. Doesn't stuff like that exist?

Members Thumper
Use a directional cardioid mic, such as a Shure SM 57.
Members jonathan_matos5
crap looks like this idea is currently out of my budget.
Members gspointer
Holy crap, AKG used to sell a set with a D112 and 3 or 4 clip-ons for 600 or so bucks. I figured the clip-ons would be cheap on ebay. Does not appear to be the case. If you can find a suitable mount for a shure 57, they work pretty well for horns. I still have no idea what you're talking about. I assume this has something to do with your horn, but I don't understand what is supposed to be producing or picking up the sound: the plunger or the horn? Members Incubitabus
+ effects listed in my original post:thu: Well nothing you would mount to the plunger or horn would really be able to catch any or all of the effect... Whats wrong with just making an effects loop on the stage mic line?

I've got a couple of old acoustic pickup elements that work really well. i use one on the saw and on the banjo. the banjo sounds really nice and natural but, with the saw you can hear the bow dragging across the blade. if you're recording you can just go back in after the fact and shelf off the lows and high and cut any really offensive frequencies. Members Guttermouth
ok,after seeing the yt video - i think you should pick up a super cheap mic,rip the element out, solder it to a 1/4 inch jack and glue it to the inside of the plunger. Members BeeTL
might work. Might?!!! WTF???
Members Incubitabus
why so? Well the reason the plunger works is because it is only allowing lower frequency sound waves to escape the instrument when the plunger is over it, much the way that a person's voice loses high frequencies when you close a door between them and the listener. Putting a mic inside the plunger is like having the mic hanging on the inside of the door. Having it outside the plunger will work when the plunger is on the horn, but it will be useless when he lifts is off of the horn.
