All accounts from this reunion have been that the band delivers as though they never left the scene. We haven't seen them on US soil since 1992 (a year after they released their most recent album), they haven't played together in over a decade, but to my ears, the music is still ahead of the curve.

I haven't been this nervous/excited to see a show since I was a teenager. Oh yeah, right about 1992. :D

I know there isn't another live act in any genres I follow that pushes the volume to such extremes. They literally hand out ear plugs to the audience and have trained emergency personnel on site to deal with the effects of the SPL and lights. I have my earplugs in hand, both the 12 dB and the 30 dB. This should be awesome.

I am totally jealous. Make sure to post the specifics or I shall haunt you by PM. :poke:

It wasn't that loud from an SPL perspective, it was loud in that the distortion of the guitars felt enormous. The drums and beats dominated th sound and made it feel like you were being kicked in the throat nearly the entire night. The vocals were mixed even lower than they are on the albums, which really made it a more rhythmic experience than a melodic one.

You Made Me Realise is the set closer (as it was 16 years ago), but last night it included about 20-25 minutes of pure noise before returning to the song's structure and closing the show. It sounded like ground zero at a space shuttle launch obscuring what may or may not have been some effort at harmony in the chaos. It felt like a test of endurance for both MBV and the audience. I don't even know what to say about it. It is a love/hate thing for me. It was incredible, but I don't think I'd ever want to experience it again. One of the people there with me thought it was awful. The other loved it and said he is enamored forever. To me it was more of a fantastic closing of their last chapter that started nearly 20 years ago, but it made me wonder whether their reemergence will bring anything new musically.

If I never see a strobe light again, I will be happy. If I never hear another album from MBV after Loveless I may not feel cheated, but I haven't lost hope that there is something worthwhile they can bring to the table in 2009.
