Members Mr.Mow
Or is it going to be like a wah pedal.. Somehow I'm convinced I need one, spend an hour dicking around with it, then jam it in a cupboard to collect dust. I've not spent time with one, everytime I see one in a shop its out of tune, shagged strings, bad action and generally fucked..
Members BoredGuitarist7
If you really wanted to, you could take one of your fretted basses and make it fretless, and fill in the frets with acetate. Its really all up to you; what sound you're looking for, and how much you want it.Fretless BasspHX3jxOrx0w
Members UK_Lefty
YES! I got a fretless for my 18th birthday because lefty fretless basses at that price were so hard to come by i couldn't turn it down. It became my only bass for about another 5yrs. I could use it for every style except slap. Ok you miss the clank of string against fret but if you get a nice one then you'll enjoy it and find ways of making it useful, and it may change the way you approach certain lines. It helped me learn a lot about playing melodically. There are cheap options around too, like Aria, Squier VM and Rondo so you dont need to blow serious cash on the Jaco tribute and then decide you dont like it. The Squier VM fretless jazz does sound very sweet! So I say go for it! Songs to convince you: Long hot summer, style council Music for Chameleons, gary numan Take my breath away, berlin...... ok, maybe not
Members RSBro
I'm with ya. I think I've had 3 or 4, and they were REALLY really nice. I need to just get a middle of the road one that sounds decent and keep it around. They're fun when you do it right.

Members bluedogaudio
I wasn't sure either, so I picked up a used Japanese Fender Jazz fetless. I eventually upgraded the bridge and pickups, and now I know I'm willing to spend a good buck on a fretless.

Members Richy
My limited brain simply cannot deal with putting my fingers ON the frets. I try one every time I'm in my local shop, but deep down, I know it will wind up being as useful as the digital horn I acquired in 1996.

Members bluedogaudio
After watching Jeff Schmidt play, I have to upgrade my fretless. I wanna get either a Pedulla or a MM.
Members Thumper
Yes, you want a fretless. The Squier Vintage Modified fretless Jazz might be a good choice. they're decent basses, well made, sound decent and are a good value. If you take to it, you're golden. If not, you can sell it and not be out a lot of cash.

Members solderjunkie
I tried a few fretless basses, but didn't like the wee Jazz necks... I pulled the frets out of my P-bass and filled the slots with 1/32" maple veneer. I reshaped the board a bit and reassembled it. I play it much more, write new parts on it, and it records VERY well. Members chris-dax
Do I really want a fretless?... yep...no doubt. I went the mor route by rebuilding my MIM jazz with an allparts unlined neck and upgraded pups and bridge... I've been playing it about a year and it is my favorite...I have my Lakland 44-02 and my Rondo P for when I need 'that sound'...but my go to is the fretless... and it will improve your playing in ways you cannot anticipate... I like that maple veneer idea - it looks awesome! But then again, I'm not one of the dotted/lined board haters.
