Members Rob G
Music Man Sting Ray 5 vs. Sadowsky MV5/RV5? Which one would you want to have in your tool chest if you were headed into the studio, or stage, & had only one 5 string bass to work with? Rob G.. Members xOriginalNinjax
The Sadowsky, almost 100% hands down. But I'd take a Lakland 55-94 (or Bob Jones or Osborn sig) over that any day.
Members willsellout
Sterling. I don't care for the Sadowsky sound at all. Dan
Members 82Daion
I would go for the Stingray 5.
Members GreaserMatt
Sting ray please, But, can I have a 4 string? That 5th string tends to confuse me, LOL,,,
Moderators Kindness Posted October 5, 2008 Moderators Share Posted October 5, 2008 Between the two, I prefer the MM. Neither would be in my top 5 of five string basses though. I would have to think more to know what that top 5 would be, but I know I wouldn't put those two that high.
Members Rob G
Gee, should I be amazed that more people don't like the Sadowsky basses? How many of you that have, &/or will post on this thread have played both the Music Man-Stingray5 , & the Sadowsky MV5, or RV5? Rob G..
Moderators Kindness Posted October 5, 2008 Moderators Share Posted October 5, 2008 I have played several MM5s extensively, one RV5 and enough RV4s to know that the things I dislike about the Sadowsky are common to their product line. Both instruments are very well made and might be the best bass in the world for you, just not for me.
Members In Absentia
The Stingray is one of my favorite basses of all time. It's just so punchy.
Members willsellout
Sadowsky's feel great and play great but they sound like ass to me. Too clear, to much high end not enough booty for me. Dan
Members matthewbass
Man, everybody is dissing Sadowskys. I don't believe it. Those basses are killer. I like MM too, don't get me wrong, but I definitely wouldn't be so quick to put them over a Sadowsky...I've played at least 12 Music Man's extensively; anything from Sting Rays to Bongos to Sterlings.... Not necessarily dissing Sadowsky's but they aren't for me. I hate the electronics he uses. Remember, we are talking about personal preference here and for me, Musicman basses just sound way better and they play pretty darn good for a mass produced instrument. Moderators Kindness Posted October 6, 2008 Moderators Share Posted October 6, 2008 Not necessarily dissing Sadowsky's but they aren't for me. Exactly. I don't have a bad word to say about them other than they aren't one of my favorite basses.
Members brake
I would take an SR5 over almost any electric bass ever..but I've been playing one as my main bass (1 of 5) for about two years now, so I'm a touch biased, I think.
Members philthygeezer
I'm biased too. If the Sadowsky sounds like my Fralin Jazz I would take the SR5. Deep dark, growly, punchy and clear all at once.

I had the M5-24 though, but the electronics were poop. However I'm spoiled with my MTD... I can't imagine dropping twice what it costs just for the NYC model. Crazy. I'd go for a Sterling 5 any day.
