Members bluedogaudio
I have a Hamer 2Tek Cruise bass I bought in the mid-90's, but I rarely play it since the tone doesn't compare to my other jazz basses. I believe the pickups are Seymour Duncan Vintage pickups. Would it be worth replacing them?
Moderators Kindness Posted October 7, 2008 Moderators Share Posted October 7, 2008 They aren't my favorite pickups.
Members Jugghaid
If you don't like them, then by all means. Maybe try some Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups. Great tone from those.
Members bluedogaudio
Hmmm....might give me an excuse to try some Delano pickups. I guess I was asking about the pickups because I thought those Duncans were supposed to be decent pickups. I guess not.
Moderators Kindness Posted October 7, 2008 Moderators Share Posted October 7, 2008 I have a trio of the 5 string models (2 fretted and one fretless). Two of them used a different set of Seymour Duncan pickups (a version of the AJB-5s) and one used a set of EMGs. I've never had any use for any of EMGs pickups so I swapped that set out with a custom set from Aero. The bass went from never used to one of my favorites. Never heard of the Aero pickups before. They look nice. I have a variety of passive Bartolini and Lindy Fralin pickups in my jazz basses right now, but I'd like to try something new. He will be able to make something exactly as you describe, so you have to make sure you are describing exactly what you want. His prices are slightly higher than Fralin, but not much and Larry makes every pickup as a custom job. Any pics of your bass?

First time I played them they were in a Lakland DJ. I was pretty impressed. More "modern" and punchy than the Fralins (which are atill the best "vintagey" sounding jazz pickups IMO). Haven't tried the Delano's though.
Members Super Bass
Haven't tried the Delano's though. They're very nice pickups. You can see pictures of their workshop on their site, very interesting. It's just a small company but they supply pickups to most of the European bass companies. Members bluedogaudio
The infamous Hamer blue. Yeah, I didn't exactly buy it because it looked cool, and almost didn't because I thought the pickguard was hideous.
