Members willsellout
So there are a few places on my list that I know nothing about and I'm hoping someone might have some experience with them: Bellingham, WA- College town, close to CanadaFreeport, WA- Not much on this place at allMobile, AL- Seems like a cool place, big city, good food.Atlantic Beach, NC- It's almost impossible to find much on this placeSt. Petersburg, FL- Seems coolJacksonville, FL- Actually I'd be in New Smyrna Beach, but it's a short distance I think to jacksonville?Yorktown, VA- Been there a couple times, how's it living there?Rochester, NY- Seems like a kickass town. Need more info though. That's it for now, anyone have anything to ad to aid me in my decision? Our main focus is on getting to a city, or near a city that has lots to do, Decent weather would be nice, and good food is a must. Dan

That's about all I have for you. How long until the obvious parody pops up? Im not touching that one with a ten foot unit.

Members i_wanna_les_paul
I visited Rochester in June 2007 and I didn't find much to do. Downtown is depressing and it is apparent that Rochester has seen better days. I don't know, I just kept thinking "Is this all there is?" It was like there was some wonderful shopping or entertainment area I just didn't find. But the finger lakes were nice.

Members burdizzos
Yorktown is decent and there is stuff to do around here, but you have to live here for a while to learn how to get around and enjoy the area. Most sailors who come here hate it because it's such a pain in the ass to figure out. Given your hatred for rednecks, I'd say that most places on your list could be crossed off. JAX is a cool town with lots of stuff to do. Plus Rowka lives there and he's good people.
Members Rowka
New Smyrna Beach is south of Daytona. You'd be about an hour's drive from Jax and Orlando. Weather (barring hurricanes) is great, if a little warm (not Miami oppressive).Lots of things to do:Daytona has tons of nightlife, the Speedway, an airport, Spring break and two bike-weeks. Orland is, well, Orlando. St. Augustine: 42 miles of beaches, and the rest is History. Jax, The country's largest small town.

Between St. Pete and Jacksonville there are about 10 different jobs for me. I'm thinking there is a good possibility I'll end up there. Members jasper383
Atlantic Beach is beautiful. The weather, beaches, food, and people all are terrific. It is not close to a big city, which is your main criterion. Rochester used to have a very lively arts scene, but since Kodak has hit hard times that may have changed. The Eastman School there produces lots of music and musicians.

What we are missing right now is the basics; a major mall, major chains of stores, no good places to eat, not much to do etc. If there is a small town that can supply that, I'm all for it. I had one of my guys put 40 picks on his list and he got.....wait for it......nothing! He got the leftover list of another 50 picks. I have a priority 5 leaving this unit which is the lowest priority there is. So if I have a pick on my list and someone with a priority 4,3,2, or 1 has it listed, they get it before I do. What I have working for me is the fact the the government is so strapped for cash that they are looking at keeping people local to where they are currently, to save on moving expenses. This will play a role, hopefully in a good way for me. Money trumps everything and I'm hoping I get Portland. Dan

Members y-o-y
More info? I know the weather sucks, as it is PNW but what else about it isn't good? My brother has lived there for almost 20 years, so I have had the chance to visit quite a few times. The weather definitely sucks. Seattle is about 90 minutes away and the university does help draw some culture to the area, but as you have experienced in Oregon, the PNW is really isolated from the rest of the lower 48 so there is a lot of homegrown charm, if you will. It is not as bad as the Oregon coast, but a bustling metropolis it is not. I'll put it this way: my mother wants to retire there. The place is absolutely crawling with hippies. If you like doing outdoorsy stuff there is lots of that to be had and Canadia is just up the road. also, check this out: http://bellingham.craigslist.org/muc/ not exactly a raging music scene, and I know that is important to you. No way in hell would I move there from Syracuse, I can tell you that... - georgestrings

You'd be about an hour's drive from Jax and Orlando. more like 2 hours to Jax. hell, it was an hour plus to St Augustine from Daytona. St Pete's is nice. based on my limited sampling, St Pete's is a little more upscale and nicer than the Daytona area. particularly if you're out at St Pete's Beach. St Pete's Beach up to Dunedin was all nice. and Florida is Florida. everything you've heard about it is generally true. i can go for about 4 days and then i can't wait to leave. on the other hand my brother moved there and never looked back. he loves it.
