This was originally destined to be a response in Catphish's "upright bass" thread, but I decided to move it instead of stealing his thunder ;)

Solderjunkie - you sound like a guy who knows his way around from your setup.

[Elvis lip-curl] Thank you... thank you very much![/Elvis lip curl]

Lots of experimentation to get to the "tones in my head".

The mag pickup provides the meat of the tone, since we play a really {censored}ing loud stage show and feedback will always be an issue. I like the Stringcharger the best of the mags I've tried... no 60hz hum, infinately adjustable, VERY hot signal with my Corelli Forte steels.

The Underwood provides a little woody-ness so it doesn't sound like a P-bass. It gives the tone of the body, as well as the strings. This pickup is good for "live band recordings" as well... playing with the band with the mag pickup, but recording from the Underwood through the board.

The drum trigger gives two things... the fingerboard slap for our psychobilly-esque tunes AND it gives a little string noise which is really desireable in a jazz setting.

I have to turn the drum trigger off on a couple of our tunes... I use a very heavy OD on two tunes and play by rolling my index and middle fingers off of the E string onto the board. I stand behind the bass and I actually push "down" on the strings until they bottom on the board, then roll my finger off the edge. This rolling technique gives awesome speed and drive, but the "percussive clunks" from my fingertips on the board really sound {censored}ty through the PA (I don't hear them much on my rig because of the EQ)

That's all for now... we'll see where this thread goes :D

cool... I just noticed all the lacquer-checking in this picture

I know exactly where you're at with the mag pickup....if you're playing with volume, you need it. I had Martin put one on my Clevinger - it cost me some serious dough (it's a one-off) and it has its flaws (single coil so there is some RF - you have to play it on the right "plane" - but it delivers the beef without all the mechanical noise of a bridge system.

If I were gigging my acoustic upright a lot, I'd probably look into that stringcharger.

The moment I first read that I knew why and what it did, jsut never thought of such a thing. Brilliant. I'll be remembering this when I can finally get an upright of my own.

How do you manage the different input levels of all 3 feeds? Mini mixer?

Two-channel Fishman preamp mounted to the tailpiece with a heavy-duty velcro strap. I can adjust the volume controls on-the-fly.

I added a 1meg volume pot to control the drum trigger volume... it's blended into the bridge piezo channel. The mag pickup has it's own channel.

My EUB has two output jacks - I can either combine the pickups through one jack or send one to each.

I almost think if some of the URB guys can add a bit more general-knowledge meat about adding pickups to an URB, etc, this thread should go into the FAQ. I'm with you, I'm very impressed with what he did.
