Members Annoying Twit
The descriptions I read of for playing pull offs is that the pulling off finger on the left hand should give the string a little pull as it is raised so that the new note rings as loudly as the previous one. But I'm finding that when I do it, the fingers on my left hand feel most natural when giving the string a fairly strong pluck, coming to rest against the next string. Is this what I should be doing, or should the pluck on a pull off be more subtle than this? (Yes, I know it's hard to know exactly how hard my left hand finger is plucking without seeing it)
Members SB900LE
So, are you saying you actually give a pluck? I sure as hell don't.
Members Hearafter
I press down harder before the pull-off, and it sorta creates a tiddly-winks motion (for lack of a better description). There's a lot of movement in a plucking-pull-off, and I don't even know how you could even make it work.I guess it doesn't really matter... as long as you can hear the pull-off, and it doesn't create fret buzz, what's the difference? Members Annoying Twit
Thanks. I'll try some more methods to see what works and what doesn't.
Members someotherguy
I'm not quite sure I understand the plucking you refer to in the original post. Plucked with the left hand finger that is pulling off the string? Thanks. I'll try some more methods to see what works and what doesn't. Yeah, you can use one method to emphasize the pull-off and another to de-emphasize.

Plucked with the left hand finger that is pulling off the string? It's not something I really planned, I was sort of surprised when I saw my finger doing it like that myself. Basically I find my finger pulling off sideways, and as the little pad on the end of my finger moves across the string it pulls the string sideways then the string's suddenly released. A sort of pluck. With my fretting finger ending up against the next string.
