Members The Unknown
Hi ! I need to lower the action of one of my basses and I'd enjoy to get your input on that. Right now, the bridge saddles are at the lowest setting possible (meaning the first and forth strings are at the lowest and the 2 others are follwing the neck radius). The neck relief seems pretty OK too. Still, I find the action a bit too high for my tastes. Any idea what to check ? The only thing I could think of is a nut adjustement (still plenty of room between the strings and the first fret) but I doubt this would be enough. Any thoughts ? Thanks ! Members Deacon_blue
You will have to shim the neck in the pocket to change the angle. Of course, it needs to be a bolt on neck. Usually a credit card thickness all the way back in the pocket and about a half inch wide is enough. Metal shims are better.

This is correct - I had the exact same problem and shimming fixed it right up. You can use business card stock, cut into strips about 1/8" wide. Start with 1 strip, right in the heel of the neck socket and check. Set your saddles somewhere in the middle so you'll have room to move them up or down for fine adjustments. Also, after this, you may have to adjust pickup height. Add other strip(s) as necessary - shouldn't need more than 1 or 2. I have some on another bass (under a pro luthier's recommendation) and never any problems at all (less then with the D'Addario I used to use). Why are you asking ?
