hi guys

i'm looking to build a P-bass for recording,i'm a guitarist who's never really played much bass

i'm going to build a USACG bass

i've pretty small hands so i don't know wether a j neck or a p neck would be better?

ash vs alder? i'd really like a white blonde finish, this tends to be done on ash,how does ash sound on a bass?

if you were starting from scratch which bridge and tuners would you suggest?

is the badass III good?

i'm definitely going to get a lollar pickup, that much is certain!

thanks

keith

Ash sounds great on bass, but I prefer Swamp Ash. I'd recommend a Gotoh 201 for the bridge, and I like the Schaller lite tuners. A lot of small-handed players prefer J-necks. I'm still partial to P-bass necks.

cool thanks for the reply,

i'm leaning towards a J neck,i haven't heard much about gotoh's bass stuff,i guess it's good quality then?

The Jazz neck might work better for someone with smaller hands.

Ash, particularly swamp ash, it light and resonant.

Alder works fine, too.

Check
for wood descriptions.

I'll second the vote for a Gotoh 201 bridge.

Why would you go with a low mass body and high mass bridge? Seems like the warmth of the Swamp Ash would be negated by the mass of the bridge. Could be wrong but it's something that I've wondered about for a while now.

Ash is usually brighter than Alder, FWIW.

A lot of people here would recoomend the Gotoh over the Bad Ass if for no other reason than you get 90% of the upgrade for 60% of the price. IMO, a Bad Ass on an Ash body bass would probably be too bright, but YMMV. Maple or Rosewood 'board?

What is the advantage of the BA over the 201? Particularly the 10% lacking in the 201. :D

I'd go with ash for its resonance.

I'd go with the heavier bridge for tuning stability only. Kindness was drubbing people a month or so ago because they were thinking greater mass = improved tone.

Smart ass :) From what I have seen here, the Bad Ass is slightly brighter than the 201, and has more mass to it, leading to the BAs advertised "overtones" etc. I've not had the opportunity to use either bridge, as I like the sheet metal I have on my Jazz, and the G&L is a thing of beauty :)

Thanks for the clarification. ;)

I personally don't find any noticeable difference in tone between the two bridges.
