Members Hearafter
I'm planning to go to Vancouver for a hockey game this season. Sources tell me that I need a passport, not to get IN to Canada... but to get OUT of Canada. Is this true? Do you guys really want to keep Americans on your side of the border that badly? Any of you 'mericans experience troubles going across the border without a passport?

At present you can't fly into or out of Canada without a passport, it's a two way deal, I can't fly to the USA either. If you drive you can get in with a drivers license and birth certificate, but a passport naturally makes it easier. In time (2009?) you won't be able to get into or out of either country without a passport.

I even fly to Vegas from the US with no passport. I just drive to Bellingham WA which is 20 mins from my house.
Members Hearafter
Running like hell to get back into the States seems to work on the southern border. Except they aren't running "back" into the states... just "into" the states. And the US Government pays to have little care packages placed all over the desert. They contain water, food, first aid... etc. I think they may even have condoms in there.
Members Sugarskull
I needed a passport to drive across the border and back again back in April. There was no getting across otherwise. I guess we're harsher here in Alberta.
Members solderjunkie
... I think they may even have condoms in there. They need some of those "care packages" in my neighborhood. It seems illegals in my state are popping out "anchor babies" as fast as they can.I guess they don't understand that they only need one for citizenship... Do you guys really want to keep Americans on your side of the border that badly?Any of you 'mericans experience troubles going across the border without a passport? You only have to go through American customs to get into the States, Canada's border agency has nothing to do with that. So that's not true. However, like has already been said, you need a passport to fly into Canada from the US and the other way around. You don't need a passport to drive into/out of Canada yet, but it's a good idea anyway. People with passports tend to get less hassle at border crossings. This is from everyone's favorite: FOX News: LOS ANGELES ? Thousands of armed guards, helicopters and infrared detectors are all used by U.S. officials in their efforts to control illegal immigration over the Mexican-U.S. border. But now the Mexican government may get involved ? not to stop illegal immigrants, but to help them sneak into America. Mexico is proposing what it calls "survival kits" for illegal immigrants that would contain medicine, bandages, dehydration powder, food and water. "If they are heroes ? and I believe they are ? if they are helping fuel the economy of the U.S., then I think their health needs should be met," said Mexican Government Minister Juan Hernandez. The kits would also contain 25 condoms for men and birth control pills for women. "AIDS is something that we import to Mexico," Hernandez said. "Our migrants go to the United States, get infected, come back and pass it on to their family members." Seems like when I was in school in Arizona, they told us that the Americans were placing those packs out there in the desert. Our schools wouldn't lie to us, would they? I believe that may be the case, though I'm not sure they've implemented that yet. I always take my passport when I go to the US so I've largely lost track of exactly what's going on. If it's any consolation, I've found it easier to get into the US than to get back into Canada.... It would be {censored}ty to come to Canada without your passport and then not be able to get back into your own country... Sounds like a pretty stupid way to implement it. I watched my very nice neighborhood become a barrio-slum. Truth! {censored}ers moved in right next door to me. 14 people in a 3-bed house... kids sleeping in the goddamn dining room. The 14th person, a baby, was the son of the 16 year old girl that lived there The house was nice when they got there, when they finally got evicted (after squatting for an extra 4 months) the house needed all new flooring, paint, and cabinets. The kids were constantly stealing my son's stuff, and the cops were over there several times a month... once to arrest 3 Mexicans that raped a girl in the back room (probably the 16 year old). They {censored}ed up my old neighborhood so bad that I moved out. Members Verne Andru
If you are flying, they will not let you on a plane in the US or Canada without a passport. If you are driving you can get into either country with a drivers license and a birth certificate. I don't believe Canadian customs will require a passport at land crossings, but in 2009 the US definitely will. At present, US CBP will accept an out-dated passport as long as the corner isn't clipped and they can swipe it. Truth be told, they get cranky if you give them a drivers license because they have to manually key the numbers into their computer. It's a big waste of time and money IMHO. Members Derek5272
In all honesty, if you drive up here, then go back, as long as you have proof of your citizenship, I doubt they'd keep you out of the US, passport required or not. However, the passport will definitely make things much easier. Right now, I just have a Canadian passport, but I'll probably get an American passport as well before the next time I go to the States - I imagine things will be easier at US customs & immigration if I have an American passport. If nothing else, I'll have fun at the US Consulate here standing in the citizens' line and laughing at the non-citizens in their longer lineup
Members bleepo
If you are flying, they will not let you on a plane in the US or Canada without a passport. Incorrect. If it's a domestic flight, you're ok. Like I said, I fly from Washington to Nevada as a Canadian citizen without fanfare. The last time was in August. No troubles at all. If you are driving you can get into either country with a drivers license and a birth certificate. Correct. You play 100 questions, and they let you go. Look em in the eye, and don't smell like pot and you're golden.

Like I said, I fly from Washington to Nevada as a Canadian citizen without fanfare. The last time was in August. No troubles at all. Sorry - my reference was to international flights, which is what the OP was asking about. FWIW, the Canadian gov warns people with dual citizenship that if you enter a country with it's passport, you are subject to it's laws. For example, if you enter the US with a US passport you are subject to the IRS and the draft if they bring it back [which I understand they are talking about]. OTOH if you enter the US with a CDN passport you dodge the bullet [so to speak].
