Who's Mike Watt?!?

He's one of those guys who in the 80s and 90s who inadvertently influenced everyone who made it, but stayed pretty independent and underground. (Minutemen and firehose were the bands he played in if that means anything to you). I got into him during his Ballhog-Tugboat era. A really good player, I don't know why he isn't more famous.

Inspired by his San Pedro working-class roots, punk rock hero Mike Watt calls his bass a "thunder broom" and uses other working man terms to describe what he does.

I found TB via Watt's cyber-trail

 

Nice.

 

I met him a few times after shows and every time he remembered my name. The last time he even invited me over to his pad in Pedro for dinner. I was traveling to Long Beach for a work trip not long after and he was heading home after that stop. It ended up not happening because he got a call to join the Stooges.

 

Have you seen the Minutemen DVD? It's great.
