Members Cliff Fiscal
I'm trying to find some songs/clips/players that are the epitome of what bass player should really be. Basically, what we're all striving for?

Members T. Alan Smith
I tend to approach this in terms of 'perfect productions/albums' rather than individual songs. I think of the electric bass work on St Peppers/White Album, Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zepplin IV, Moving Pictures, Eat 'em & Smile, Pearl Jam 10, Absolution... Members countrybass
A few cats that I really dig are Dave Pomeroy, who is a studio guy in Nashville, Jerry Flowers, bassist for Keith Urban, and whomever is the bassist for Taylor Swift. He plays some really cool licks.

Although I would add just about anything by Tony Levin to this list.

Members Renfield
For me it's somewhere between this: and this (especially around the 1:20 mark):
Members In Absentia
The bit @ 2:45 is amazing IMO. Colin Edwin is one of the tightest, most tasteful playing bassists out right now. I can't imagine having Gavin Harrison behind me to follow. Members Funkee1
i don't have a clip, but Grover Washington's original recording of "Mr. Magic" is one of the deepest, funkiest grooves ever, and whoever played bass on that (I think Gordon Edwards, maybe..) was just perfect. Members Cliff Fiscal
Wow....I can see why people say T-40s are Ric-ish sounding.....Lemmy is rocking that unique tone. A ton of great examples......what about each clip really sets it apart?

Members Jugghaid
Well, I'm mostly asking for your unique opinion...... Okay......I would say it's a matter of playing what is appropriate for the musical style. It can be very laid back like Jamerson on a LOT of motown records. Simple is better and he always seemed to find the perfect line for the song. Not too basic, not too simple. It can also be very up front and busy like Geddy or Sheehan with DLR (think Elephant gun, shyboy, etc) Or it can be a combination of the two, like Chuck Rainey an Aja. All terrific bassists who played to the song and whatever it called for.

I tried to keep personal taste out of my selections. That is why I didn't mention Levin or Bernard Edwards. ...but those two cats'll school ya! I think what's missing is intensity. Personally, my tastes are being upfront while maintaining simplicity...but I'm a groove guy and enjoy playing off the space between the notes moreso than the notes themselves.
