Members Renfield
Maybe someone here can add too the rumour mill regarding the current PS3's. Are any of them backwards compatible for PS2 games? The larger of the two hard drive versions used to be, but I get mixed reports if either version is now. From one store to the next I get a different answer.

To answer your question: non of the current production models are backward compatible with PS2 games. The original 80GB model did via software emulation, but the current 80GB (or 160GB) do not. There's a good chart that shows the differences of each model on wikipedia.
Members scampi
I have an 80gb that is bc via software emulation I bought it with the mgs4 bundle, so it's not that old I don't know what's going on with the current bundles or units though
Members squish_man24
my model was one of the older 80 gig models, it runs ps2 and ps1 games perfectly. The only problem I have is that if you wanted to use your old data stored on your memory card, you have to spend more money to go buy a ps memory card adaptor... pain in the ass
Members Derek5272
Yeah, the 80GB in the MGS4 bundle were the last ones produced with backwards compatibility. I've got one, gamer tag Derek5272, but I don't have any games for it at the moment.
Members Super Bass
My PSN ID is SB-1000. I have GTA IV, Saints Row 2, Midnight Club: Los Angeles (just got it today, it's {censored}in awesome!), also got MGS4 and GT5 Prologue (sucks!). My PS3 is only a 40GB one though. Members Renfield
My PS2 is getting tired and needs to be retired soon. But I have to say, the idea of buying all new games to upgrade sucks monkey nuts. The sole reason I have stuck through PS from the beginning is/was the backwards compatibility feature. I retired my PS one when it died, but bought the next gen system because I can play my old games. They get old and retired, but I move forward with current games. I am all about the idea of PS3, but my son has a lot of games for hte PS2, and he still plays many of them, easily 10 on an ongoing rotation. I'd have to replace at least 5-6 of them the day I bought a PS3.
Members squish_man24
well you can still buy ps2's new for ridiculously cheap now, something like 127 CAD at places like walmart, why don't you do that? I replaced my huge ps2 with one of the slim ones just so I could play ps2 and ps games without the ps3 if I ever got a spare tv. It's a good idea if you don't want to buy all new games. I'm sure they still make games for the ps2 that are coming out for ps3 anyways, just the graphics aren't as great. (ie guitar hero world tour, call of duty 3, etc...)
