I'm not gonna bother to post either story, but a man here in LA has gotten in trouble for having a Sarah Palin effigy hangign from his tree as a "Halloween" decoration, and someone in Indiana had a Barack Obama effigy in his front yard.

Apparently, there was an Obama effigy found on a college campus yesterday too.

Don't get me wrong...... I'm as politically incorrect as the next guy, but I cannot believe that, in 2008, we have to explain to people how that might be offensive!

The guy from Indiana said "It's not racist! Obama being president is the scariest thing I could think of!" Maybe so..... but do we really need to explain to you why an African American hanging from a tree in your front yard could be misinterpreted?

Same for the guy here in LA. Must we really explain this??

Simple solution. DON'T HANG EFFIGIES IN YOUR FRONT YARD!!!!

Come on America..... It's like if I put up a Halloween display that features a cross that catches fire. It's not racism.....heck, I'm black! But should I be suprised when the neighbors ask me to take it down???

Jeez.

I'll say the same thing I've always said about this. It's the intent, not the perception. If someone hangs an effigy of a black guy with an Eagles jersey with #5, it's not a racist comment, it's an attack on Donovan McNabb. The Palin effigy is no different, nor the Obama effigy. All are extremely hateful messages that have no part in our society. I take exception to people who attempt to make anything that has a racial content to it...like an effigy of a specific person who *happens* to be black...into a racial issue. It ain't about racial hatred, it's about hatred, period, and that's *just* as bad, IMO.

I'm sick of this election.

I wish I still had my guillotine. Prolly get the PTA after my ass. Hey... HEEEEY.... it's been a while since I pissed off the neighbors, I bet I could rebuild my guillotine tonight if I stayed late at work....

I agree whole-heartedly.

You should hang them out back.

+1... I hear the PC crowd doesn't like public buildings, bridges, overpasses, billboards, or other highly visible effigys. Keep them in the backyard people and only if you have a fence to hide it... :poke:

Agreed, and I am amazed that, in this day and age, certain people need that explained to them.

Adults who have their own kids, no less!

Making an effigy only makes sense if it's of a sitting president and it is done in a sign of protest for policy. As has been mentioned, Clinton and Bush have had their share. If Obama is elected, it will be no different. Now as far as a halloween decoration . . . . . .I think that it's in poor taste, but there is no law against it, nor should there be.

Nows here's the flip side if this. And it's about intent. Couple of years ago I saw several articles, in fact we may have discussed it here, about a family that had a big Halloween lawn display, every year. That year, a bus driver complained because among the macabre displays which included beheaded corpses, a zombie rising from a grave, and assorted gross notions, was a hanging corpse. The bus driver decided for herself that it was a black person and was racist in intent. This somehow made the news and the family explained their display and left it up, much to the disdain of many.

I support them totally. It's a holiday display, the intent was gross fun at nobody's expense not hatred, and any perception is the problem of the perceiver, IMO.

One of the best quotes I've read on the forum . . . . EVER!:thu:

Though I do like Uncle Sam Effigy's burning in the streets of Gaza City.

Yet again, I agree with you. I remember that lady, and I was embarrased by her actions.

Magically, one day after the similar situation happened to an alleged "Obama" effigy!

I believe I touched on this in another thread yesterday. And like clockwork, there ya go.

:)

Pathetic.

You don't and almost never know the intent and therein lies the problem. When the KKK burns a cross the meaning is abundantly clear but there are lots of libs who love to blur the lines.

What happened to freedom of expression?

I don't like the effigies of Palin or Obama but as was pointed out, no one seemed to have a problem with hanging and/or burning Bush and Cheney in effigy. Another flaming example of a double standard on the part of libs and the complicit news media.

The Palin effigy could be construed as hate toward women but since she is a conservative woman it appears to be OK. Just more hypocrisy on the part of the neoMarxists and PC news media.

Where's the outrage at the background checks that occur when a citizen does a truth to power question to your Messiah? Isn't that supposed to be freedom of expression when one asks a pertinant question? Or, does this only apply to the neo-Marxists?

Where's the outrage at the ACORN? Seems to me to be a far larger and more dangerous bit of news but again, there is not much outrage and there should be. Why? Because they support Barak Hussein Obama and few are trying to hide it.
