My family has a challenge ahead of us (Updated: 11/14/08)

My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer a few days after her 44th birthday; this was several weeks ago. She's been keeping it on the down low, so I've kept quiet here. We went out to dinner tonight, sans kids, and were talking about things and this place came up. She asked if I had mentioned it here, and I told her no. She asked "why not?" since this place is like a second home to me and many of you have become personal friends of mine (and ours).

So, now you all know.

We're doing fine here. My wife (and I) have been researching the illness and have been interviewing doctors. It looks like we're going to proceed with a suite of doctors from the University of Chicago. The treatment procedure is still being decided but radiation and likely chemotherapy are around the corner. My wife may soon be as bald as me.

As a family, we're tighter than ever and confident that this is just a bump in the road.

Thanks for reading.

:)

Jeff,

Although I can't claim to really know you at all, I have found there is much about you to respect and admire. I wish you and your family the absolute best during what I can only imagine will be trying times ahead.

Good health and godspeed.

Brad.

Jeff, your family is in my thoughts. Your wife and kids couldn't have a better person to help them through what has to be an incredibly challenging time, and I hope that you all get through it in good shape.

Hopefully it is just a bump in the road.

Good vibes headed your way.

look into the cancer treatment center too

That place came highly recommended. My wife contacted them recently and was really turned off by the place. She's very open-minded too as we visited a local holistic-style doctorl She said the CTC came off as very slick and was immediately trying to get our insurance info. Following up with several other doctors since then, they said that the CTC tends to oversell their approach and bills for the max based on insurance without overall regard for their patients. I'm not sure about the truth in it, but regardless, my wife was turned off by them.

Damn, that {censored}ing sucks. :(

Hard to beat the U of Chi for much of anything though, so you're likely in good hands there.

Also, when the time comes, your wife can use wigs to try out all the hair colors and styles she's always wondered about.

It's a small silver lining on one big nasty raincloud, but I've had two friends who've gone through chemo and they both thought that aspect was actually fun (you know, in the midst of everything else sucking, and all... :D)

I'll keep you in my prayers (and throw a mantra your way as well, just in case ;))

hmm maybe the one in Tulsa is ran differently. i have a friend who works for the local one and i have heard no such report.

the cancer treatment center is one of the main reasons people come to Tulsa.

my sentiments are still the same. best wishes to your family.

I'm sure it's a fine establishment; my wife just didn't feel comfortable when she had two phone consultations with them.

Her team of doctors at the University of Chicago are a top-notch crew on the cutting edge of research and treatment.

I am sorry to hear that, from your postings on this board I know you have a great family and I seem to recall you spearheading somekind of a donation drive and delivering the goods a few years back. You should have plenty of karma coming your way, I will still say a prayer and send Mojo.

Prayers and mojo to your family.

It's a subject close to home for me. My son's grandmother had a single mastectomy a few years ago. Both myself and his mother are volunteers in the local Breast Cancer awareness run every year. She's the local director, I pull together musical talent to rally encouragement at check points.

You nailed it on the head, it's just a minor hurdle in life, no more. :)
