Members BeefJerky
Do they paint the finish under the pickguards if they come with a pickguard stock? Also, what's the point of putting a thumb rest on the opposite of where you pluck IE:
Members tylytle
Yes it is painted, and back in the day a lot of bassist used their thumbs.
Members W33nie
Yes it is painted, and back in the day a lot of bassist used their thumbs. adding on to this, leo fender thought that it would be easier for guitarists to use their thumbs, so he put the rest there
Members Renfield
Yes it is painted, and back in the day a lot of bassist used their thumbs. Though I will say that I was rather cheesed to learn that under the PG of my Fender Highway One jazz bass they only sprayed the brown base coat and the black burst, but not the red because it is normally hidden. Members BeefJerky
I dont see how they would pluck with the thumbrest on the wrong side?Or am I confused?
Members Renfield
I dont see how they would pluck with the thumbrest on the wrong side?Or am I confused? You hook your index and middle finger under it and strum downward with your thumb. Like a noob might on an acoustic guitar.
Members BeefJerky
oh!now I understand. Thanks for the clarification. I'm used to thumb rests on the other side to where you actually rest your thumb on the rest and then pluck normally.

Members dDigitalPimp
Do they paint the finish under the pickguards if they come with a pickguard stock? yes but if you plan on removing the pickguard there is a big nasty route from the pup cavity down to the control cavity. Members Perfessor
I was always taught the "thumb rest" on the G string side was a pick stop.
Members Renfield
I was always taught the "thumb rest" on the G string side was a pick stop. Bass players don't use picks. Certainly not in the context of when that feature was first added.
Members bnyswonger
I was always taught the "thumb rest" on the G string side was a pick stop. When on earth would that come into play? If I were playing with pick, it would come no where near that thing.
Members mrcrow
yes generally and as pointed out that (*)rest is not for a thumb but it can be if moved beats me why they put it there...nostalgia and marketing hype
Members Cpt. Spliff
You hook your index and middle finger under it and strum downward with your thumb. Like a noob might on an acoustic guitar. Almost correct, apart from bassists back in the day, when they used the thumb, did not strum. As an explanation on the position of the fingerrest your post works well, though. I still use my thumb to a high degree. Much to my chagrin I still get a more even attack that way. I often rest my middle- and ringfinger so as to use my thumb and indexfinger for playing.
