I was impressed by a metal band.

As a university trained musician, I tend to be critical of musicianship. But last week when I picked up my 15 year old son, he asked if we could listen to his Avenged sevenfold cd. I really haven't appreciated any sort of rock music since the days of Warren DeMartini, George Lynch, and the like. But man was I impressed. Especially with the lead guitarest and drummer. To me it's refreshing to see these young guys tearing it up once again.

A7X has been in my Top 5 bands since I first heard "Bat Country" and bought "City of Evil".

They're all very technically talented and accomplished guys, especially The Rev (drums) and Gates (lead guitars). Gates is a Musician's Institute-trained guitard. I think he studied Jazz Theory, though. It still translates pretty damn well, though.

All 4 of their albums are different and do certain things for me. But they're all great.

They wrote in their Guitar World cover issue, "You either love us undying or hate everything about us. There's no middle ground."

I've usually found this to be true. :) I'm an undying-support-type fan.

I know what I'll be listening to on the way home! :thu:

especially live!

I know right? I thought "they do like 20 time signature changes a song. They'll mess up live."

Nope. They were flawless. Their tone is always great too. They're not a huge band, they don't have sound techs, but it always good.

They are not a just technical cold metal band like others. They have tons of feeling. You can hear it in the bass solo on viridian. You can feel the sadness in the jazz part in Arts of the Sky, and then in same song you have fun with a bluegrass part. And if the chorus and last half of Sun of Nothing doesn't take on spiritual high, you don't have a soul. When listening to Alaska you go from high to low to high to low. Between the Buried and Me is the one of few bands for me where i feel like i'm listening to movements, not just a verse and chorus being repeated. It takes me on a trip. To me this is what music should be at it's purest form. They aren't worried about selling. They want to express themselves and have some fun at the same time.

Avenged Sevenfold is a great band, but I CANNOT STAND their singer. He sings with his nose pinched shut. Whiny, choked sound. Drives me up a wall.

At least it ain't the yogurt-gargling X-core vocals... but still....

Their first two albums prior to City of Evil he sings a lot differently and more to the style.

I heard he had to have throat surgery, like Bert of The Used did, which accounts for a lot of the change.

The vox on the latest album, "Avenged Sevenfold" are a lot better than "City of Evil", which of the 4 albums has the worst vocal tracks IMO.

hahahaha!!!! you just gave me the best damn ammo to make my friend john cry! :poke:

I can elaborate if you'd prefer, but it was not a fun show to watch. I was nodding off at one point. John Myung has the worst tone ever too. Utterly atrocious.

Same here. his voice is like a cheese grater going up my spine. But the band itself is very tight and tlented. Good players.

Between the Buried and me are an excellent band musically.

I can find something to like about most bands, including Dream Theater. I like them, I just can't listen to them for too long. Great bunch of musicians and they are allvery talented individually as well. They may notbethe best songwriters, but sometimes I lke to listen to top notch musicians just to see what level they take their skill to. It doesn't always have to beabout the context for me. That's why I like guys like Vai as well. I just like hearing that crazy talent translated to the fretboard.
