Members Thrashterpiece
Can any of you guys help me pick out the effects this guy is using on this track? The distortion on here is nice and crisp and clear. I would love to have something similar. I know he uses those ESP LTD basses but I havent found any info on his setup for this album. Thanks in advance. P.S. The part in question starts at 48 seconds in. Then again at 1:38.
Members fretless
distortion full on should get you there , it's an odd effect to my ears , could be mostly in the mixing but off the top of my head it sounds like a subtle chorus , something like a Roland Dimension D may even be some 'verb on it , tough call though , so subtle that I wouldn't even worry about anything other than the distortion . I was going to pitch the Boss Digital Dimension D, the same thing? Amazing, bright, shimmering chorus that just adds this top end zing, like the sound of new strings. I have the Behringer clone of it. Can't afford the real thing. There's some definite grit in there, but the fundamental tone doesn't change. I suspect he might use an SVT-2Pro, and uses the footswitch to hit the next stage of tube gain, which is internally tied to a graphic eq to help keep things balanced. It's not always balls on, but it gets dirty when he needs it.

The Roland is a rare rack mount unit ( studio secret ) but that could be done as you say with other pedals and as jonjohn pointed out blending channels , my guess too probably just some simple mixing and blending , still think it's so subtle that just about anything will get you there , even just dry grit . Members ToeJamFootball
Sorry man, I tried to think back to when I saw them live, but all I can remember is thrashin' my head around
Members Optimus Prime
Definitely some clean in there. That's all I'd worry about though. Honestly it's not worth all the trouble of splitting the signal and buying a mixer to add a chorus to the clean. It would require 5 pedals to get that tone, splitter, clean blend loop, fuzz, chorus and a small mixer. Not worth it. As it is right now, I don't want to buy 3 pedals for this fuzz idea that I have. True. When you hear subtle effects blended in with clean, the VAST majority of the time it was added in the studio, and isn't part of the live tone. As you indicated, to get that live you need 3+ pedals, to get that in the studio, the effect is just routed through an aux send. One knob to turn to get the same result. With fresh strings, a good strong pick and a bass with dual humbuckers, when you pick right between them you can get this phase/chorus effect too just with your hands. So it can even be that.
