Get the Nordie's. I've had both Fralins and Nordie's, I kept the Nordies. They seem to have a slightly warmer, more vintage tone that I really dig.
:thu:

well the deal is, this guy has a CV jazz with fralins for $360 shipped. without the fralins he'd take $320. so i can get the fralins for $40. If i wanted Nordstands, id ahve to pay full price + installation

Get it with the Fralins. If you really want the Nordies, rip out the Fralins, sell them and put in the Nordies. That's pretty much what I did and I actually got more for the Fralins than I paid for the Nordies.

Don't get me wrong, Fralins are really nice pickups, you may like them quite a bit. To my ears, the Nordies seemed to have a touch more warmth, which is what I was after.

Lindy Fralin makes great pickups, however, there are about 1,001 reasons I now use Aero Pickups for EVERYTHING. It will cost slightly more, but I don't expect to use anyone else for pickups as long as Larry @ Aero is doing his thing.

I've got Fralins in my Joe Osborn, but I'm interested in something different. I don't know much about pickups, really, but I get a sense that the Fralins are a little more "saturated" than I'd like. I dunno.

What do you like about the Aeros?

Sorry...
my
Fralins are overwound...

Why would someone buy an
under
wound pickup???

I think that over-wound and under-wound are totally subjective terms since the amount of winding determines the tone of the pickup. IIRC, generally, the more winding, the less low and high end, the more "perceived" mids and the greater the output. The less winding, the more full range the tone and the less the output. I may be wrong but that's what I seem to remember reading.

#1 above all else, I like dealing with Larry. If all else were equal, I'd still pay more to work with him.

#2 Larry builds exactly the pickup I ask him to each time. If I ask him to do something he doesn't think I'd like, he tells me why and suggests an alternative. Everything he builds sounds exactly as he predicts.

ben lindsey here in toledo builds custom basses+guitars,i seen a few of his p,and jazz basses, man he swears by the fralins and is endorsed, err whatever they call it by fralins to exclusively load alll the basses with their pups. man does he ever build a NOICE fender jazz vintage knock-off!!! he quoted me a 75-reissue, jazz body, maple neck+board, black block inlays, fralins only, wired in series, papaell, natural body color,a few dozen coats of clear finish, polished of course, black p-guard,hand rolled neck edges,a whopping $500.00down and another $500.00 about 5-6 months later at time of delivery.sorry bout tootin the horn for him,but he really stresses the fralins are the ICEING ON DA CAKE!!! and the build quality on the bass he made for the bassist of the group ritchie black moore band was OFF THE HOOK!!! again sorry for all the hot air i generated in this simple, yet debatable topic... FRALINS OR BUST!!!!!!!! piece-lump....

Honestly, there are a lot of good pickups. I have some Fralins and some Barts, but I've played Nords that are good too, and I also like the Dimarzio UltraJazz. I just bought some Delanos and will hopefully get those installed soon. You might just want to call a few of those companies and see what they say.
