Members RSBro
I usually try and take note whenever I read an interview or write-up of metal guys as far as their strings go. It's kinda weird you'll find guys that tune a whole step, or a half step with 1 1/2 on the E, etc., and then are strung up with medium or medium light strings? Whenever I've tried this it just isn't "there" as far as presence and the like go. I guess this could be alleviated by a simple setup and neck and pickup adjustment, eh? I just ask, because I'm trying to incorporate more string bends into stuff, and it's kinda tough on a set of heavy stainless'!
Members Bryan316
Well, I swing GHS Bass Boomer Mediums on my 5's, half a step down. Never had a problem so far. Fat yet articulate. But I want/need to try different brands to see if I like something better.

Members Bryan316
45 65 85 105 130 The B string is thick as hell. I wonder if too thick, sometimes. I've seen sets from other brands with a 125 for the low B. Makes me hella-curious...
Members mike fitzwell
I do a half-step down on my Bongo 5 with nickel lights from Webstrings which are .035 - .110. I love the way light gauge strings feel 1/2 step down...not sure why.
Members RSBro
Cool cool. Ha, I use a .135 B on my MTD... MTD Nickel mediums! They're pretty darned nice though. I'll be experimenting with my To-Be Spector, however!
Members Bryan316
The strings I used on my Ibanez was a fresh pack of Spectors, I believe these guys: STNI45-130 Spector Nickel 5 String Set Medium Gauge (.45-.130) I kept the package. Cuz damnit, my tracks on this EP sound MONSTROUS. Even with a crap Soundgear!
Members RSBro
Damn, forgot Spector did their own strings too! I think those were the last set I had on my old NS5CRFM before I traded it, and you're right- they were amazing!
Members Bryan316
Okay. That MTD Kingston ZX didn't thrill me last night. I dunno why, but my total CRAP Ibanez sits better in the mix with the band. This Kingston is a difficult beast to tame, cuz it's got such a HOT HOT HOT output from those Bartolinis it overdrives too easily. So I'ma work on it summore. But it does have some weird strings, a harmonic 6th fret under the G string, and not a lot of sustain. So I'ma swap the strings KEEPING the old strings, reset everything, adjust the action and truss rod so I'm happy, and try again next week. If I can get a bit better midrange presence when I run up the fretboard, then it's a keeper. But I really don't know if strings can make THAT big of a difference. But I'ma order up two packs of these Spectors. Because I KNOW they're killer strings. These Blue Steels are an experiment at this point. Should I do a before-after recording?
