Members grimble_grumble
hello all.i play in a rock/experimental/indie band. my current setup is a fender p, into an svt classic, into an avatar 4x10.i wouldnt say i dont like my tone out of the svt, problem is i have to turn it up so loud to get there, that it drowns everyone out. (shows are different, because i can turn up, but practice is what im worried about.) we are pretty volume conscious when we practice so we have a good mix of everything and nothing gets drowned out.guitar players are running through a fender super reverb, and another fender combo, i cant remember the name of. so ive been researching some old ampegs, looking to get the grrr grrrr grrrrrr tone without having to be so damn loud.problem is alot of the ones im looking at are less than half the wattage of the classic. im wondering if i will be too quiet with one of these, as opposed to too loud with the svt. been looking at v4(b), b 25, and another one i cant remember the name of. help!!! Moderators Kindness Posted November 7, 2008 Moderators Share Posted November 7, 2008 when you get into 50 -100 watt tube heads your cabinet's efficiency ratings can make or break your rig. Exactly. An SVT into a 2x10 might not be loud enough, whereas a V4B into a pair of efficient 15s might be too much.

Members Guttermouth
explain to me what you mean by efficiency. speakers all have an efficiency rating. the long and short of it is this - the higher the rating, the louder the speaker will sound. Members Crescent Seven
explain to me what you mean by efficiency. Think of your dick as your amp's power output, and a hooker's beav as the speaker. A more efficient beaver will allow your wang to slide in easier, faster, and with less lube. An inefficient taco will require you to lube that {censored}er up, and basically stand on it to get it in there. In this weird scenario, the loose {censored} is better. Members willsellout
I still would love to have a vintage Ampeg. No way would I haul around an SVT, but I'd love a 50-100 watt head. Dan

Members bnyswonger
Josh, you're a born educator. OP -you need to get your hands on a V4B. The B25 is nice in the studio, but won't cut it on the gig .
Members grimble_grumble
Just for practice? Why worry? cuz i want the badass tone ALL the time. not just on recording or practice. and the svt classic is one heavy bitch

Members jackcheez
so ive been researching some old ampegs, looking to get the grrr grrrr grrrrrr tone without having to be so damn loud. The SVT was designed to sound loud, fat, clear, and organic. Maybe you need a different head all together.
Members bnyswonger
The B25 IIRC also has a 16 ohm output which can be toughie to match with a cab. If you want something that give you a square wave all the time at a reasonable volume, maybe an old school fender bassman or bandmaster? The two tube sunns would do it too. Moderators Kindness Posted November 7, 2008 Moderators Share Posted November 7, 2008 The B25 IIRC also has a 16 ohm output which can be toughie to match with a cab. It can also be rewired to 8 ohms. Still not the most useful, but at least it isn't 16 only.

Actually no rewiring is necessary; just plug into the external speaker jack.
