Members Sugarskull
My buddy quit his band and I might be sitting in to replace him tonight. I'm just waiting on the word and the set list. So... if you don't hear from me for the rest of the day, I'm learning a full night of music in the space of a few hours. Yoiks! This will be my fist time filling in for someone. I know it's done all the time, but I'm a little nervous. How many of you have done this? How was it? Members Rowka
I've done it plenty of times. Subbing for guys without a clue as to the set list. I've been playing long enough that at this point I've played just about every note there is. It's just a matter of putting them in the right order Really, just keep an eye on the guitarist chordings and be mindful of the changes. Have fun. Members gspointer
Ouch, I did 30+ songs half-assed in less than 2 weeks. Good luck, I would either bail or tell them I will ad-lib everything.

Members solderjunkie
50 songs... sounds like there might be a few covers in there;) It's pretty easy to learn songs you already know. Enjoy yourself:thu:
Members Sugarskull
^^^^^ Oh of course! lots of covers and I happen to have their CD too, so I can learn their originals too. Ouch, I did 30+ songs half-assed in less than 2 weeks. Good luck, I would either bail or tell them I will ad-lib everything. Adlib is what they wanted. I asked for the set list so I could go over everything and write cheat sheets. It looks easy so far. I know probably 1/4 of them already and the resta re country, blues or Rockabilly so... 145 in E or A- mostly (famous last words) Whoo whoo, this is gonna be fun.Have a good weekend! If you're out partying, have a shot of Jack for me. I'll be sure to tip my cowboy hat to ya'll as well.
Members jonjohn
Really, just keep an eye on the guitarist chordings and be mindful of the changes.Have fun. +1 Once you get over being nervous It's not so hard. And If you make mistakes no one really cares, the band will be grateful you are there. And the songs you are not sure on just turn down a bit.You will be buzzing after the gig:thu:
Members Sugarskull
40 songs left to go. Just giving my fingers a break from the 2 blisters already started. I've got butterflies and biscuits in my tummy, but I'll keep all the advice here in mind. Just relax, watch the guitar player and when in doubt, go to the root and hang there. These are the guys I'll be sitting in with tonight. http://www.myspace.com/smokin45s

Members MrJoshua
When in doubt, walk it out. Remember; if you can't tell what key you're supposed to be in, chances are the audience can't tell either.
Members vinxbass
I of my gigs is as a fill in bass player and I have to learn 4 sets worth of music right on the spot, you know the 1, the 2, the 4, the 5. The guitarist basically yells out the intervals and my job is to nail it, I usually have pretty good success. Though, it's kind of nerve wrecking, I actually enjoy being able to fill the bill and help out.

Members Super Bass
Good luck! hmm.. we need a db rawk smiley. you'll be fine, just remember to breath... just hearing that makes me stressed out! bring a 6'er with you, you'll thank me later. I don't get this, why would a 6 string bass help? It doesn't instantly make you a better player or give you any notes that you can't otherwise get. Ok maybe it opens up different octaves but whatever... I just don't understand your comment.

Members james on bass
I love doing sub work. Did a few gigs late this summer filling in for an injured bass player. Like Rowka said, keep an eye on the guitarist and "read" his chords if you get stuck, assuming of course you know basic guitar chords. Good luck - you'll have a blast. Members someotherguy
If you get too lost, stop and make it sound like you meant too. Watch and listen. Then come in at the beginning of the next chorus or verse. Have fun with it.
