Members pjh2112
I need some input on this one. I am trying to decide between a mxr-80 and a fulltone bassdrive. I like the multi uses I can get out of the mxr. If you're not familiar it's a direct box/od pedal. But I have also heard some really good things about the fulltone. I guess what I am really asking is.... Is the fulltone such a good pedal that it outweighs the versatility I would get out of the mxr?

I use the MXR myself, just a light bit of grind blended in with mostly clean tone passed through. I don't really think the distortion (when I switch the 'blend' knob all the way to distorted) is up to par compared to the BassDrive or many other bass-centric distortion boxes. It's good for a flavoring, not so much as a standalone distortion box. This is, all of course, just my humble opinion. PS: I really do like the preamp on the MXR. Running through it flat gives my amp some very interesting tonal options. I don't use the DI as my Mo'Bass has a very useable EQ, plus I use the onboard effects. Members rpsands
I never touch my MXR anymore now that I've got distortion onboard on my preamp. Its distortion was usable but nothing to write home about. Nothing like the GK diesel dawg circuit (at least for me I've used the MXR into our PA a few times for fiddling around, and it seemed remarkably clean and nice sounding. I never tried it for recording so I can't say there.
Members Jugghaid
The MXR is a nice unit (I like it better than the Sansamp DI) but for distorton, the Fulltone is much much better IMO.
Members t3ch
I echo the other comments. Not a huge fan of the MXR-80, but if you need some ridiculous, bone crushing, unusable distortion it can do it for you. You know what pedal I really liked that doesn't seem to get much love? The MXR doubleshot. I wasn't a fan of the bassdrive either. Both suck, get a catastrofuzz
