Members qmel4
Anyone have their G&L tuned BEAD.......Any major adjustments needed?..........Can I do it or is it a bit challenging?
Members fretless
I wouldn't do it , I love G strings too much but you may need to re-cut the nut , or get another nut and cut that one , that way you can go back and forth . And of course a setup .
Members Thumper
I've got my '79 Franken-P/J set up BEAD. I needed to resize the nut slots just a wee bit, and adjusted the truss rod to get the action where I wanted it. I went with a Fender stainless steel 5-string set .045-.130 and saved the G string as a spare for another set.
Members jonathan_matos5
you may have just given me a cheaper solution to my B string GAS than buying a 5er. checks wallet... i can't even afford new strings:eek:
Members Thunderbroom
My L-2000 is one of a select few that is not tuned BEAD.
Members Texas Noise Factory
I've done this with both my ASAT and my L2000. I just V cut the nut on them. Then the string rides true at any gauge. Just don't cut it too deep. Its been a while, and I've since converted the ASAT back to standard tuning. I don't remember me having to do much really when I made the conversion. Maybe a little trussrod tweak, and a bridge adjustment.
Members Dave Campbell
Funny, I was going to post this same topic regarding B-E-A-Ding a Jazz Bass. What about the 34" scale... does the B string flop?35" seems like a common scale for 5-strings.

It depends because everyone's definition of "flop" is different. None of my BEAD basses flop IMO and more than one is detuned using a standard four string set. While some (maybe many) won't like the feel, I've played a few standard fivers that had a floppier B. My recommendation to the OP is to just detune with the current strings and see how it feels. If you like it, great! If not, go with the BEAD from a five string set. I didn't file the nut on any of the basses that I did this with. They worked themselves into the slot over time. I went with a heavier bottom string: .105 E string to .130 B string. It's not floppy at all.
Members Dave Campbell
That's good to know. My current roster includes an '84 L2000, a Jazz clone and a soon arriving Signature Jazz Bass... so one of the three I'll try out the lower tuning.I'm currently using D'Addario medium lights, but yes switching to a heavier gauge makes sense.
