Gibson Victory...?

Ah, my favorite basses! :thu: The Victory's came in three models, the most popular being the single pickup Standard and the two pickup Artist. That one is a Standard, and all passive. The Artist had an active preamp with the two passive pickups. They are all made of rock maple, body and neck, and are rather heavy, but not unbearably so. The pickups are split coil humbuckers, and that bass would have a sound in the P-bass family, but way ballsier and defined. Victory's just flat out rock, and are about as stable and reliable as a rock. The necks profile is nice and thin, and totally comfortable to play even with my large mitts. I got my Victory 24 years ago now and it's never had anything go wrong with it, and the neck is still great. Which reminds me, the necks are also reinforced with dual rectangular steel rods on each side of the truss rod. They are super stable. I can't recommend one strong enough, but just make sure it's been taken care of and hasn't had any significant damage like idiots dropping them and breaking the headstock. Try to play that one if you can, they are not like anything else Gibson ever made, and all just sound excellent. And don't let anyone ever tell you that they are crap because they're Gibsons, Victory's are a superior bass then and now.

What's the third one? I love the Victory Artist bass, but I thought they only mad that and the Standard.

Someone on here, a while ago, clued me in that there was a Custom model as well. That was basically the two pickup Artist without the preamp, all passive. I don't remember who it was, but they had a black Custom Victory...

Me either. My guess is that it was one of those freak rare things that escape the Gibson factory from time to time. I played with a guitarist once who even had an active factory Les Paul. I've never seen one of those either, but it was the real deal...

Yeah, they made active versions of the Les Paul, Firebird, Sonex 180 Deluxe, SG, ES-335, and of course the RD Artist and Victory Artist guitars... (Although the RD Custom was active too but only existed in guitar form.)

I've seen all of these for sale at one time or another. Some are more rare than others though. I think all of the active electronics were either based on what you have in the Gibson RD Artists (Moog Music designed) or the Gibson Victory Artists (Gibson's own design).
