Members Emprov
Tone is completely subjective -- you're not going to find reasonable support for a person's likes or dislikes of it any more than you'll find support for liking the color blue. That being said, I like both my passive J and my active Lakland.

Members Renfield
PASSIVE - I've never heard/played an active jazz bass i liked Now it's my answer. Best thing you can do to a jazz IMO is drop Barts in it. They are dark by nature, but the jazz livens them up. To get the darkness back at will, kick in a series/parallel switch on a push/pull from the tone. I made my living as a professional touring guitar tech for 8 years, plus had dozens of clients on the side as well. In all my experimenting and trying everything that came through my bench (which was a lot), for my ears, the only bass that could touch a passive J with Barts was an active Washburn Bantam with active Barts. They are custom pups just for the Bantam, Even though I don't think the Bantam still exists, if it does, even less likely it's made in USA. But Bart still sells it's pups separately to this day, and there is a reason. Amazing tone.

Members scampi
def passive for a jazz certain di's out there can impart a more active vibe if you like but the fundamental jazz tones for me personally are of the passive variety

Members Crescent Seven
If you're rocking the USA Jazz, you don't need it to be active. Those basses have a nice, hot signal and a classic tone. C7

Arrogantly twisting an icing anointment utensil, I would poot forth that passive J's sound better and if going active I would be into a Music Man instead. Members ToeJamFootball
Why not Passive pickups with an active preamp? Then you could go back and forth.
Members Death Hands
that's what most people mean by active v passive.
Members Poltergeist
i like active electronics with passive pickups. you have the switch and you can do so much more. i have two of those..... but for a jazz, in general, pimping it up with passive SD's will make it bring the house down to a burning wreck. maybe a Fender Jazz 24 would be the best option for you. Members hi.flyer
Passive, w/ single coils. Otherwise, IMO, we aren't even really talking about a J bass anymore.
Members Flogger59
Passives record so much better. Active pickups sound too "produced" out of the box, and it's hard to get them to sit right in the mix.
Members RSBro
For a J, I'd go passive but upgrade to Barts, Lindy Fralin's or some Villex's!
Members dwalmz
After more than 35+ years of playing both passive and active basses, I gotta say passive (or active pups with simple V/V/T).
