Is there anyone out there who has tried to access their speaker in an old BW cab? I get a "crackling" sound through this cab (I bought the thing back in 1982 or 1983). I spoke with David at Dabeck amps yesterday and he told me to check the wiring into the speakers. He also said that the old BW cabs had to be accessed from the front. Well, I've looked over this cab and can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the front grill without messing up the aluminum side strips on the front. I removed the front corner covers but when I give the grill a slight tug, it still seems like its glued on or something. Is there a trick to getting this off without tearing it up?

 DOH!!! I didn't have enough light where I was working to see them. I feel like a moron now. Thanks for the info..... I just got it into better light, but I don't see any screws. Are they supposed to be on the outside of the cab? There is only Tolex down the sides. The only screws I can see are the two on the Peavey logo on the top and the BW sign on the bottom.

It may not have any screws. The first time I took the grille off my old Peavey cab I thought it would break, but it didn't. It was held on by four plastic hook-and-loop (basically Velcro) tabs, and they'd been together so long that they were like glue.

The grille on the front has VERY STRONG hook and loop fasteners.

Use a VERY WIDE tool (spackle blade 2 - 3 inches wide) and stick it in between the edge of the grill and cabinet and pry the grill off the cabinet.

If you don't use a very wide tool for this, you may mar the cabinet/grill.

Cheers

Yep, that was it!!!! Thanks everyone for your help. It's off and it was the velcro fasteners in the corners. Now I just have to hope I can keep the kids out of the room while I take the speaker out and check out the connections. You guys are awesome!!!

I would add that you should do the prying from the top or bottom edge, where it's just the fabric over the grill frame, rather than along the sides with the aluminum trim. IIRC, the "grippy bits" are not really velcro, not really even hook/loop...sorta semi-interlocking pins that just mash into each other.
