Members NeverTheMachine
Hi there. I'm a guitarist, but I want to pick up a cheap bass to bring to rehearsal's because our bassist is ... no longer our bassist. I don't mind getting something used even. I just need something that will sound like a bass and that I can plug line into the computer to record bass parts until we get a new, dependable player. Members SB900LE
Yamaha RBX170 is nice in that price range, or this used RBX774 which would be kickin-a for $200 or so you can get a lot more for your money if you go used, of course
Members ToeJamFootball
It's over $200, but I'd get a Squier VM over an SX.
Members GreaserMatt
SX will work, but try to find one of the squire vintage modofied p basses used. They are only $250 new, so you should be able to find one used for $200. I have an sx jazz, & I like it, but I love playing my squire VM p bass... Members dabbler
It's over $200, but I'd get a Squier VM over an SX. There are, of course, many ways to skin a cat, but if you're going to go over the $200 limit, I would still get an SX SJB and put an Audere in it for $149. Don't get me wrong, the VM's are nice basses, but for my money, I'd give up the Ebonite fretboard (I like Maple anyways) and Alnico pups (the ceramics in the SX are quite strong and have decent tone) and take the pre. Not saying it's better for everybody... just that that's what I would do.
Members Jerry_L
Keeping it under $200 retail, choices are limited. The short-scale Dean EVO XM would be a good choice for a doubling guitarist. The Ibanez GSR100EX would be another good choice in that price range. Interesting. I'd never put a preamp that expensive into a bass that cheap...but to each their own like you said. The ebonol board is only on the fretless jazz bass...they have a rosewood board on the P and a maple board on the vintage P. I'd go with a Vintage Modified as well. I like them much better than the SX's I've played...
Members PartsTele101
I just bought a used 5 string squire pro tone P bass. Maybe I got lucky, but I actually think this one tops american p basses, and is way more beautiful. $250 at a local pawn shop.

If you like the bass enough to buy it and play it, and you like the pre, well it works for me. My only concern when it comes to mod costs is what does it cost for me to get what I want. And I am an economy kinda guy, I have active basses that cost less than the Audere... but the pre in those can't do what the audere can do. Yes, I did it. Members Bogster
A used 80's Peavey Foundation can usually be found online for the price you're looking for. I still have mine and for the money I cannot sing it's praises enough. These basses are highly underrated.
