Best bass overdrive for MUSE covers?

My band plays 2 Muse covers "Time is Running Out" and "Hysteria." He bought a big muff to try and chase down the tone... but that is not working at all for the kind of sound.

So how should our bass player go about getting Wolstenholm's distortion sound?

(our bass player uses a HWY1 J-Bass through an Ampeg SVT half stack)

I think theres A LOT that goes into Chris' tone.

I heard a great cover somewhere on the internets with a Bongo HH ---> EH Little Big Muff Pi ----> ampeg b 15 tube amp

He's got the ampeg stack, and I think he should be able to pull it off with the J bass, so I think the Little Big muff should be the cherry on top

But what do i know

Those are both very different "overdrive" sounds, with the "TIRO" actually being a synth.

"Hysteria" should be easily done with the Muff or any decent fuzz though.

Search Chris' gear simply on Google and you'll see exactly what he uses. He's pretty forward about it and has been over the years, since they are as a band so effects-driven.

There's a billion and one threads about his pedalboard and live setup on Talkbass in the Effects section too. Much like Justin (from Tool).

For Hysteria, I've been using a fuzz pedal with a slight mid boost. For TIRO, I have a setting on the Digitech bass synth Wah that works pretty well. (Sub synth or somesuch). A muff or other fuzz would work for the rest of the song, IF it can keep the low end. I've been using the Muff model built into the GT6B alot, or I have a Bluebeard Fuzz that works REALLY well for bass.
