I'm looking for a good deal on EMG Musicman styled pick-ups

I tried the search, but fell short with any real results. But was just wondering if anybody here has an EMG MM-CS or MM-TW Musicman styled pick-up for sale or trade? I actually need two. I'm putting them into what I'm hoping will be my ultimate bass (well...for death and black metal).

Heres what I'm dropping them in:

So, if anybody can hook a brotha' up, that'd be sweet. Thanx! :thu:

Any reason EMG? Duncans would seem like a better fit for Metal...IMHO...

I kinda like the tightness, and almost robot like precision the EMG's give the bass. S'funny, cuz for guitar, I got bored with EMG's after a year, and went back to DiMarzios...but I like that thickness the Super 3's give me, and they record very well.

But I want the bass to be very, I dunno...I know i'll get flamed for this, but that really mechanical sound you hear in Necrophagist, I think. But with a bit og grit and balls underneath still.

However, I'm not 100% opposed to newer things. I did try some Duncan Quarter pounders in a P/J combo awhile back...not bad...but I still prefered the EMG's for this purpose. Unless, do you think for a Musicman set-up it could be different?

Dude, I don't play metal, but that is one SLEEK BEAUTY!

Oh, it is indeed! Thanx! :thu:

The neck plays VERY well too.and I like how it balances as well. total win for me. Just the elctronics need some upgrading. Other than that...this thing is perfect for me!

Double MMs tend to eat sustain. Your BC Rich has tons of it anyway so it shouldn't be a problem.

EMGs are perfect pickups for metal. I never tried their MM models though. They must be pretty new.

Another reason I think the EMG's would work...they have little to no magnet pull, since they rely on their internal pre-amp. So, the string can ring out alot more without being pulled by those two ginormous magnets. Also, the low noise floor is nice too, since I do use a fairly healthy amount of overdrive on many parts, to create a dense wall of filth with my guitars.

A buddy of mine had an EMH MM-CS Musicman pick-up in a 5 string Stingray for a short time. That thing, into his Ampeg SVTpro and 8x10 cab was {censored}ing god-like for metal!!!

My backline is nothing so legendary though. Just a GK Backline 600 Head into its corresponding 4x10 cabinet, w/ a Rocktron 310 Limiter/Compressor, and a Boss Bass Chorus pedal I use for some Type-O Negative type sounds. The GK's gain channel is surprisingly good though...at first I thought it'd be just a gimmick, but after spending some time dialing it in, I got it sounding really good. so good, I sold off my Boss ODB-3

not sure how this rig would work live though. But I'm really only doing home recording at this time, so it's more than enough for that. Though, I may be filling in some on bass for a friends black metal band

I dunno, EMG's don't tend to have the "grit" you're talking about. I've found EMG's to be a very sterile, bland tone (almost too much so) but they do give good reproduction of the bass itself. All the Duncan's I've played have had a LOT more "grind" behind them, and have a bit more coloration. But hey, in the end, it's your choice...hopefully you like it though, cuz $240 for pickups isn't cheap!

Heres a question.

I'm looking at hte Duncan SMB-4D (their ceramic Musicman replacemnt pick-up). They do say for optimal results to use it with a pre-amp of some sort. So, would I still need to install an active pre-amp to really get the best out of it?

Furthermore....as a cheaper alternative, are the EMG-HZ's any good?

so...yes or no? Do I have to use a pre-amp of some sort to really unlock passive Musicman style pick-ups?

I know the SD site recommends you do, and every musicman bass I ever seen had an active pre-map coupled w/ passive pick-ups. This BC Rich being the only exception that I can recall.

Thing is if that is true, than getting the EMG's would be cheaper cuz they already have the internal pre-amps.

However, if I DON'T need an active pre-amp, i just may go with the duncan SMB-4D's after all. I dunno.....

Thoughts, experience, anyone?

I say "no" to the EMG-HZs. I've never liked 'em. Not to sound contradictory, but I don't feel like the dual MM pickups kill sustain. Every MM HH I've played sustained for days. What about the Nordstrands or the Delano pickups as well. I don't know how well those pickups work for metal (though, I must say, that I've never thought any pickup was "metal" inherently).

Hmm...not familiar with those brands. I'll haveta' research some info on them.

Right now though, I'm basically trying to decide between EMG's (NOT the HZ's....the 'real' ones), or the Seymour Duncan SMD-4D's.

The pick should be loud, but doesnt have to be overdriven. My amp has an overdrive channel. I just need it be powerful, but clear since I'll be playing alot of fast stuff
