Members Cliff Fiscal
It's funny how your mind (memory) plays tricks on you....... I made a big stick about this base....swearing up and down that it was a quilted black cherry......which led to a lot of my overall confusion on which model it actually was. Plus there wasn't a battery compartment....so I assumed it was passive. I noticed the inlayed headstock logo........AND the body was contoured....so it couldn't be the Performer series. For a while, I was fairly sure it was a NS2000/Q4....almost positive. Well I went to the pawn shop tonight.....since they're running a 25% off promotion. I had been scoping out the bass for a month or more....even made a big huge thread about how I couldn't figure out which model it was. I stopped in there once a week badgering them to lower the price....no go. It was marked at $350 with a soft Fender case (). Thinking it was a lesser quality imported Spector, I wasn't interested in paying that much.......I was even called a "cheap bastard, and told to fork over an extra $100, and just get a legend" in that thread. With the 25% off deal, I figured what the heck....at least buy it, post pictures, and find out what the hell it was.......if it wasn't a good deal, just return it. I got to the pawn shop and realized it wasn't quilted black cherry.....it was what looked like a fancy wood cap on the body.....my first thought was bubinga....but still didn't know for sure. Well from what I can tell....it actually turned out to be a spector legend bubinga. Anything you guys can tell me about this thing? What's the deal with the set neck and bolt on versions? I'm just happy I know what it is finally....after all that BS. ....and that I got a fairly decent bass at a decent price. again.

Members Funkee1
The Spector Legend series replaced the NS 2000Q4. They are made in Korea, but made to Spectors specifications. They have EMG- SSD pickups, and a bolt-on neck, and they have the patented Hipshot bridge that all good Spectors have. They list at about $800, and usually street about $550. At the price you paid, it's not a steal, but it's a good deal. Legends are a damn sight better than a lot of basses in their price range. Beware!! They are gateway basses. Pretty soon, you'll be looking for a USA Spector, and trying to justify the $4000 (in other words, welcome to my world!!)

Now that I set it up, yes, it plays REALLY well... ....it sounds good to my ears, but this is my first active bass......so I'm still tweaking....and I haven't jammed with the band yet. I only cared to make sure I wasn't over paying for the thing.

Adjusting the inotation was weird......goofy side mounted set screws. What do they go for used? The feel of the bass is really nice, I love the neck profile. fat, but not too chunky. Oh no......that's just what I need....a high end bad habit.

The side mounted screws hold the posts in place so you can make quick string changes without having to reset so often. At least, I think that's what they're for...... Members Cliff Fiscal
I assumed they locked the saddles in place.....since the saddles are essentially loose. The set screws clamp the saddles, and prevent them from moving or falling out.

Members Funkee1
Why are the Tone Pump Jr. circuits looked down upon? Some people say they do not sound as good as "True" EMGs. Spectors used to come with an Aguilar preamp. I kind of like the Tone Pump myself.

I'm not too picky I guess.....I just like being able to tweak the tone away from the amp. Sounds a lot tighter and clearer then my passive basses. All of this spector stuff, and EMG stuff is hard to sort through......

Members Crescent Seven
That's a sweet bass. I have a Legend Custom 5 that I can't put down. The only thing I'd change is the preamp on mine, it has the EMG pre and I'm not that sold on it. I wish the bass had about 3x the output that it does. I have yet to play a bass that's more comfortable for me than my Spector. Funkee's right about the gateway thing, I'd LOVE to own a Czech Spector. It's a good thing there's not a dealer in Denver anymore, otherwise I'd probably have one by now. C7

Which I don;'t get because it's got an 18v preamp :D

Which I don;'t get because it's got an 18v preamp :D I modified my Spector to 18v and it didn't give me any more output, it just made the EQ controls more dramatic and powerful. Which I have no beef with; if I dime all the controls on the bass, it has a ton of output, but it's totally uncontrollable. C7

Members jmfields
I had a Spector Legend Classic 6-String in Slate Grey (essentially black). Decent sounding bass acoustically, but the electronics produced more hiss than bass for my tastes.
Members Crescent Seven
How do you mod the circuit? Just two 9v batteries in series? Exactly. It's a $1 mod that takes all of about 2 minutes. The hardest part about the job is finding room for the second 9v in the cavity. It made a difference, but it didn't boost the flat output signal like I hoped it would. What it did was make the EQ controls more powerful; now, if I want a nice boost of bass, I bump it off the detente about 1/8 of a turn. If I want to make people catch their beers, I crank it. C7 is it the aguilar pre? I had one come stock in one of my czech spectors and I really disliked it - bandwidths were too fat, eq was boost only, and the signal into di or my rack pre was uncontrollable - I replaced it with an emg bts and it was a perfect match as you discovered the 18v mod has more to do with onboard headroom, in this case giving you cleaner more effective eq - that mod typically just lends minor enhancement to what's already present, but doesn't boost the ouput really (as most folks might assume)
