Reccomendations For new amp

Hey HCBF! I have just formed a new 80s rock band called "Aztec" and our bassist has a badass USA Spector [i think it's USA anyway] but his amp is a little Peavey MAX series amp. I have a Mesa/Boogie and the other guitarist has a Peavey 2x12, so we don't think it will cut it, especially once we get a drummer. Anyway, he will have $500 CDN [right around Christmas, now he has $280 cdn] to spend on a new amp. I'm telling him to get a decent combo over a junky halfer. He's looking at an Ampeg BA115 combo for $325 cdn. So if you fine dudes n' gals here on HCBF could give us some ideas on new or used bass amps, that'd be badass.

Cheers,

Will

Ampeg BA115 is a decent practice amp, but not effective for gigging unless the band is fairly quiet.

Check the unofficial "Official HCBF Bass Rig," though I don't know if you can get it for five bills CDN.

Look for used Peavey heads...Nitro, Firebass, Max450, Max700, etc. Used Peavey cabinets...4x10 or 1x15.

Also check with local music stores about there previous rentals. There are probably some good deals out there if you look.

+1... and BTW, "a junky halfer" outperforms a combo nearly all the time - and most definitely at that price point, besides allowing for an eventual upgrade to a full stack, or cabs to leave at 2 places...

Not too knowledgeable about combo's, but I can tell you this. I have an Ampeg BA 115 that I use for practice. It works fine for that. I usually bring it to gigs as a backup amp. One night my rig went down so I ran out to the truck to get the BA 115. I had it cranked and I couldn't hear myself. So tell him to rule that out.

That's no budget to work with if your very serious at all. I recommend renting until you save enough gig earnings to buy something worthwhile. There's the Peavey TNT, which is the standard for folks in your situation, but they're twice that new. Keep your eyes open for a used one.

Man I agree with that. I just bought a Mark Bass LM2. 500 watts with a 4 ohm cab. And It's loud! It's only like $600. The problem is that he would need a cab then. I would do what T say's and have him save up to get a real rig.

Done.
:)

See? I'm getting better at jacking these "budget" rig ideas and posting them as my own, since I have little to zero interaction with them!
:D

I paid a little over $300 (including shipping) for my used Peavey head. How's that for a budget rig? Not sure it helps our Canadian friend, though...

A USA Spector into a Peavey TNT? Isn't that like washing down a Lou Malnati's pizza with Old Milwaukee beer?

This is what you do. Apply for the Carvin credit card at Carvin.com and you can buy the mini-stack below for 699.99 and have three months to pay it off, interest free!

It's a killer head and one of the better 2x10 cabs around, deep enough to handle 5'ers and powerful enough to handle the 400w of sweet tone the head will be pumping into it. Now you'll be doin that Spector justice and you can add another cab later (not that you'll need it) for a 600w stack.

Thanks for the ideas. Few things I need to clear up though

He's 15, so I doubt he can get a CC.

Peavey TNT halfer for $300 cdn a good deal?

Honestly, I've never played a TNT, so I'm not sure. I recently saw a bassplayer playing a Squier P-Bass through a TNT combo live. He was pushing his signal through the PA as well. Overall, his tone wasn't bad except that he was overdriving his amp, so, when he really attacked the strings, it sounded like crap.

That will be well over twice his budget. THe LMII alone will be $800.

There are some good deals on Kijiji these days, at least around my area.

For $500 it's going to be tough, but he'll be able to find something. Minimum 200W is what he should look at. A used Yorkville 200W combo if you can find one would be great - could always plug in an extension cab later on.

Damn dude. Seems like every post of yours is a ad for Carvin. Tell me you are at least getting commission from these guys.

:D

Yo.

Go used and don't look for pretty - look for functional.

If you guys are what I think you are musically, he's going to need at least a

4x10 or better yet a 2X15. The good news is, you can find a working old peavey, traynor, or similar head + cab for that kind of dough, and then you've at least got something that can move a little air.

Just speaking from experience. Carvin's putting out some high quality stuff now for low-to-medium dollars. That USA Spector deserves a real amp and the amp above will give him transparent, powerful tone which can be "warmed up" nicely with the drive knob.

I have the Markbass LMII + Avatar 410 @ 8 ohms.

This is a good, powerful, and very portable rig to start with.

You can always add or upgrade cabs later.
