basically, Harper won a minority government about 2 months ago (7 weeks-ish) which means that his party could not pass things on their own (as they would have been able to in a majority government) and now the other parties are teaming up (Liberal, NDP, and Frenchies) to form a new coalition government in the effort to "overthrow" Harper as Prime Minister... But first they had the get... I guess... "permission" from the Queen to suspend Harpers government until decisions were made.

It's all very much fun... not having a choice in your own government anymore, especially those who voted Harper in...:bor:

The practicality of the matter is that the Queen's representative in Canada, the Governor General, doesn't have any actual authority to deny requests from the prime minister. The position is purely ceremonial. The PM asked to suspend parliament for a short time in order to stave off the vote of no confidence that could pave the way for a coalition. The GG really had no choice but to suspend parliament.

I'm not fan of Harper but I do think that this is probably the best option right now. It will give the government the opportunity to present a budget to the house, which will in effect, make the budget the confidence issue. At that point if the current government does not have the confidence of the house, this coalition may take over as the government. I think it's a bit undemocratic but it is constitutionally sound. I'm not all that incensed about it because the coalition government would:

A) Be made up of duly elected MPs.

B) Won't last jig time before the 3 member parties begin infighting anyway.

The arguments that Harper supporters are making about the coalition being in bed with the separatist Bloc Quebecois party hold no water because on more than one occasion Harper himself has courted alliances with the Bloc.

I'm predicting another federal election by the spring, which will likely result in a Conservative majority especially if we have to spend any time under coalition government.

This is pretty much what I feel too, and why. Canada will get so pissed off that the coalition effectively nulled our election, and the resulting coaltion will make such a mess of things that the Conservatives will just get the majority they've been after as a result.

This is all a joke. Of course, it's a joke that Harper called for an early election in the first place this past October just because he was ahead in the polls. He gets a few more seats, and the other parties start discussing coalition right away. It all makes sense now as to why Dion didn't immediately step down after the defeat at the polls like was suggested would happen within days - they were just waiting for an excuse for a non-confidance vote.

God help us all if the Bloc has any say in anything outside of Quebec City.

I did also read that the only other time we've had a coalition government was back in 1917 and it was a quite successful goverment.

Because we're a pack of rabid Atheists, so therefore we don't believe in his existence.

Well, no I haven't. He did not come to this part of Tennessee, which is a good thing. There are some crazy, toothless fools with high powered rifles around here.
