Members GearsOfWar
Hey ya guys, Quick question:Could you please give me some suggestions for buying a 5 string bass that is suitable for playing thrash metal?Got a 6 stringer, which is working all right, but this band is playing in D#. I have my 6 stringer set up with low action, so playing in D# causes to much string buzz etc.And I like the set up on my 6 stringer, so I don

Members GearsOfWar
Are you referring to a Yamaha TRB? I love my Yammy! Yup. My 6 stringer is a Yamaha also and I love it, so maybe I should stop whining about what 5 stringer to get and go for the TRB. Good quality I personally think, for a a good price...and I guess it would be a suitable bass for the more heavy side of music, but with a little bit of "roundness" to it, if you know what I mean.. The TRB1005 basses are a great value IMO. It's always best to try one out first if you haven't already. What model is your current 6-string? Members Bogster
Ibanez BTB405 I've owned a half dozen different 5 strings (and played a multitude of them) and this was the only one I liked enough to buy and keep. It's currently my only fiver:
Members Bryan316
Well, considering most of the music I play is either 80's thrash metal, modern power metal, or progressive SUPER metal (heh heh) I'll share my gear, and why I gotz em. For years now my A bass has been an Ibanez Soundgear SR-305 I got from eBay for $300. Strung up 1/2 step down. Best damn return on investment ever. I've had the bass setup once, and it's my comfiest, easiest, most reliable bass. Not my favorite sounding bass, but it gets the job done and never argues with me. I also have its twin, a natural finished clone. Keep that one in natural tuning. My first 5 stringer was an Ibanez EX series PIECE OF CRAP. It came with horrid J pickups and crap electronics. After I got the two Ibby's I stripped this EX apart and built a new body using a butcher's maple chopping block. EMG electronics. My own shape and design. It's been my stage backup for quite a while now. But I intend to rebuild this design from scratch, with Bartolinis, a Hipshot A bridge, and a set-neck build. My recent GAS has earned me an ESP LTD that I have a love-hate relationship with. It feels great, plays great, looks great, stays in tune great, but sounds a bit harsh. It's the EMG-clone pickups. I think they're actually EMG-HZ's and relabeled by ESP. I'm really wanting to keep this bass. But I'm close to figuring it out. It needed a mid cut, a LOT of treble cut, and just a bit of bass boost. Thank Gawd for active electronics! I've got a gig tomorrow night, so I'll start the show with it, and jump off if I don't like how it goes. I also had a bass shipped up from Atlanta after seeing it down there in late September. It's a used MTD Kingston ZX. Now at first glance, it's a stunning bass. It sounds like a monster! But... the previous owner beat it to {censored} and treated it like a stepchild. The zero fret was gouged beyond repair and needs to be replaced. It had a dead 6th fret and a harmonic 7th fret under the G string. Unplayable. And the bridge was corroded and spotted, and just ugly. For $1400, I'd rather save up a bit more and get my Tobias Killer B! So that MTD went back to the store. It's still there, I'm sure it'll work better for someone else, but with all the beating it took, you're looking at $250-300 worth of repairs and cleanup to make it desirable again. Now, you mentioned Tobias. I have been in love with the Killer B5's for a looong while now. It's a wonderful bass. The asymmetrical neck is so easy to play and really helps if you ever have hand fatigue from long gigs and practices, and the electronics are MAD Bart bite and growl! But it's EQ is very easy to control and tweak. You can be smooth and gentle, or dig in for some snarling nasty growl. LOVE that bass. I'll own one some day. Some day sooner, if I didn't just dump a grand on the next bass... ...an Ibanez Prestige SR 1005 EFM. It's WAY too easy to upgrade to this from my other Ibby's, cuz it's the same string spacing, neck shape, same feel and playability. BUT it has such impressive improvements over a standard SDGR. This one's a thru-body neck with flamed maple body wings, a 5 piece maple/walnut neck which I can already tell is much more rigid than my other Ibby's, the Bartolini MK1 Korean-made pickups, incredibly comfy sculpted body, individual bridges/saddles for each string, and the neck-thru gives me MAD SUSTAIN! Notes ring for months! Light years better than my bolt-on Ibby's, which is the real reason I went looking for an upgrade. These basses are reliable and can take punishment, but they're just dead for sustain. This Prestige is a totally different animal. Makes me proud to say that I like playing Ibanez basses. And best of all, a 3-band EQ with the midrange having a sweepable parametric mid control! This is a FUN thing to have! I love how I can pinpoint the exact frequency I want to boost for my solo noodling, and I've even used it for a wah-wah effect in the endings of songs. This bass is WAAAAY too comfy and sounds too damned good, man. It was $850 and the case (which is fit for a pharoah's sarcophagus!) was $150 so it's a $1000 upgrade to a HELL of a bass. Here's a family portrait: Meet the Ibanez Prestige Soundgear SR 1005 EFM Now let's get to the suprise.... THE CASE! This is a sarcophagus fit for a Pharoah's bass. This fuzzy super-custom-fit bass bed is the finest case I've ever seen. It's crazy! I took a bunch of pics, but you'd need to see it in person to get just how perfectly custom-fit this thing is for this exact bass. Notice this funky shape in the case surrounding the neck join? It's for broken hands! A cutaway to easily grab your bass and yank that sucka! Plenty of room around that headstock. No magical detunings. LIKE A GLOVE! So if your local Guitarded Center still has one of these, they've cut the price down from their original $1300 to $1000 case included out the door. It's worth hunting down and test-driving. The only bass I'd want other than this, is either my own design, or the Killer B 5.

Well there are a few types:Both the Euro's and ReBops are Czech made, but the Euro's are neck-thru and the ReBops are bolt-on, with different electronics. The Euro's have the USA electronics and hardware and features, etc.. But either one would be killer. I second the Tobias Killer B mentioned above.
