Members J.
I was excited to go and have heard about the great deals you can get at shows, but I was disappointed. It was the first day so the people at the tables weren't yet ready to deal much (most not at all), but the prices were insane. I'd be better off going to Gander Mountain or any sports shopping and buying off their used rack. For pete's sake, people were trying to sell Mosin Nagant rifles for $150, when you get get them everywhere for $99. The cheapest AK-47 was $479. There was a Remington 1100 just like the one I just got, minus the scope and slug barrel, in not-as-good condition, for a "marked down" price of $479. I'm going to go to the next one that comes around, but it better be superior to this one.
Members Crescent Seven
They can be hit or miss. There's a gun show in Denver every other day, so there are some deals to be found, especially on handguns.C7
Members lug
As you pointed out, last day is usually much better for the buyer than first day.
Members Goofball Jones
Used to go to gun shows out in Southern California all the time in the early 80's. Was exciting and terrifying all at the same time. Picked up a stainless steel .45 Longslide one time there.
Members gspointer
I stopped going years ago. The guns I wanted I could usually find a better deal at a gun store. I did help a friend score a pretty good deal on a new Ruger 77 in 7mm mag.

Members One_Dude
I went to a local gun show last year and found the same thing; prices way too high. There were only a few guns that I had any interest in and I had shopped around and knew what their prices should be. The same models at the gun show were priced significantly higher than at the local gun stores. Two things concern me about gun show buys; 1) What if there is a problem with the gun you bought there. The dealer is usually not local and may not stand behind what he sells. 2) I believe this is still true, in Ohio there is no background check necessary for a gun purchase when the sale is at a gun show. This tends to drive the prices up because some of the buyers who attend those shows cannot pass the background check and are willing to pay a higher price to avoid it. When you select a gun, the dealer takes it off the table and puts it in a bin, and a runner takes it up front, and you get a slip. You head over and stand in line, they run your background, and if it's clean, you purchase the gun from a cashier at the front. No cash changes hands between the dealer and the buyer. The system works, but if you don't get down there early to buy, you end up waiting for hours to make your purchase.C7

Century Arms is the main importer of Romanian AK-47's, and they're down to their last crates of the things. While it's true that there are "real" select-fire AK's all over the world, they'd never get past US Customs. There are so many goofy gun regulations and standards that Century Arms has to abide by that it's downright ridiculous. They essentially have to "refurb" each gun that comes in, because each one needs a prerequisite number of US parts installed. The older Romanian AK's, the SAR-1 models, were banned because the mechanism was too close to a select fire AK, even though the SAR-1 were just semi auto. The new WASR ones comply with current code. Everyone is afraid that the new administration is going to pass some retarded gun ban, so gun prices are going through the roof. I talked to one AK dealer at a show, and he said he didn't even know when he'd be able to more in. He used to sell one AK at each gun show, but now he sells up to 25 each week. I guess Century Arms is importing them as fast as they can, but customs is simply overwhelmed. After the election, things became frantic. It's stupid too, because those Romanian WASR AK-47 clones are rough. The metal, and especially the wood, are all low quality with really shoddy finishing. Comparing a Russian AK to a Romanian clone is like night and day. I remember seeing Romanian AKs in pawnshops for $199 all the time in 2004 and 2005. If you really looked hard, you could score one for $150. The cheapest one I saw at the gun show was $479. Hopefully the Obama administration won't pass some stupid ban, and things will get back to normal.

Members J.
There seems to be this perception out there that almost everyone in the United States has a gun. That's not true at all - a National Geographic Channel special I saw three nights ago put the figure at one in every four. That means 25% of Americans own at least one gun. That goes for air rifles and those who might have a rusted hand-me-down shotgun buried in the closet as well as those who have their own private arsenals. We're not even close to 50% ownership. Just look at it from the other side: The vast majority of Americans do not own a gun. It probably looks that way on TV though.
Members Scary Bill
Americans are scary. TV and movies show a lot of violence and guns. Even the news networks report a lot of shootings. The reality is that most gun related crime happens in large metro areas, more specifically low income areas. There is very rarely a shooting in the boonies where I live and those tend to be hunting related. I have been aound many guns that haven't killed any one, they must all be defective. Members theAntihero
I have been aound many guns that haven't killed any one, they must all be defective. Obviously because we all know that owning a gun causes your very soul to crave the blood of others right??? Ive been to many gun shows, it seems like all the sellers think that you are desperate to buy a gun,any gun regardless of price. So what that its 3 times the going rate???, this is a gun show dammit, you must walk out with a gun or all your buddies shall look down on you for all eternity. They are usually a good place to pick up odd things though, such as Carcano clips and ammo for cheaper than the going rate.
Members One_Dude
I am against gun control but I try to stay out of discussions about it especially with those who think there is a relationship between legal guns and crimes committed using them. There was a case in Columbus, Ohio about two years ago where a bad guy went in to rob a bank. There was a "special duty" cop (a regular on his day off) working at the bank. The bad guy drew his gun and was threatening folks in the bank; the "special duty" cop drew his gun but didn't shoot fast enough and took a bullet in the neck. He later died from the wound and the bad guy was caught a couple of days later. If only the bad guy had seen the sign on the bank door that said "no guns allowed" this whole incident could have been avoided. Thus, the logic bucket of the gun control folks holds no water. And of course, the bad guy's gun was illegally acquired and owned. Now I imagine that the gun control types will say that if the bad guy could not have acquired a gun then no one would have been killed; so let's see, we better then control the sale of knives, hammers, axes, baseball bats, chain saws, sharp tipped pencils, staple guns, boiling hot coffee from McDonald's and on and on. Members Zon5string
Gun shows around here (SoCal) have gotten pretty lame. But then, so have gun laws. I haven't been to a gun show in a couple of years, mainly because there are more beef jerky, candle, survival, leather, home-made crafts, knife and other non-gun vendors than anything else. I agree that, for the few gun sellers that there are, they are asking far too much for their products. Not to mention the absence of after-the-sale support. Ammo prices, however, tend to be pretty good, if you're willing to buy in bulk (500+ rounds).
