Never going to GC again

Found a Fender jazz bass at a great price at the local GC, had cash, and the sales guy knew I was going to buy it. As I'm sitting there playing it the guy comes over with a new price tag $200 more than what it was. He says they don't discount for cash deals anymore and that when I'm ready I can find him. I decide to buy a Badass 2 bridge and leave. I look on craigslist and find a guy down the street from my house selling a MIM fretless jazz for $200, and go to a music store I rarely go to and get a new set of EMG jazz pickups for $70 out the door. I went home and in under 2 hours and less than $350 I have one of the best sounding basses I have ever heard. I've heard GC is going broke, I hope so.

Yeah, GC won't haggle with the prices anymore. I got the same attitude when I went in to look at a new Strat. Honestly, they wanted me to pay the "our price" on the sticker. Nothing off at all. I mean, I had cash-in-hand and was ready to go...but they wouldn't budge. So I walk out, expecting perhaps someone will go, okay...maybe we can do this for you. You know, something...ANYTHING.

I didn't get anything, just got to my car and drove away.

He said the manager noticed it. It was at the lower price for at least a week when I first noticed it. I told them they're supposed to sell it for the price that is on it but supposedly the manager wouldn't let it go for the listed price, was even going to charge me more for the {censored}ty soft case!

The GC in my area never pulled anything like that on me and I've bought many things there. They've even discounted stuff without my asking!

Your GC must be a bad apple.

This is a pretty recent thing. They explained to me that it's going corporate wide. I went into 2 different GC's about 50 miles apart and it was the same deal.

Have you bought anything big at your GC lately?

So just go to Elderly and be done with it. I'd much rather give them my money than GC.

i like looking around and playing with the toys at GC but most of the basses i play there dont really do for me. they seem kinda crappy, even some of the ones that are supposed to be pretty high-end. i took my Fender P in one time just to see what they'd offer if i was to sell. they told me at the most $120 wtf? ive had 2 or 3 different people just up and offer $600 cash on the table for it.

Yeah Elderly is worth the drive and they actually set up their basses. And they do pretty good on trade in's. There is something about the way the basses feel at GC, all the necks are bowed and nobody can find an allen wrench. Elderly's is just as good as Manny's or Rudy's in NY in my opinion.

i used to like to hang at a place called Dillon's. but they closed a while back. i like the small private owned guitar shops. they tend to have better deals and better gear

Where are you located? We had a Dillon's that recently closed, but those guys were all pompous pricks. The surprising thing is that the best music store in my town for knowledgeable sales people IS Guitar Center.

they were not pompous dicks! well, maybe a couple were jackasses but for the most part are good people and a few are friends of mine. well one is actually my fiance. and they know a hell of alot about the gear. and the GC here doesnt really do much for me, theyre the ones that said my fender was only worth 120 . and i dont really talk to anyone there. the gear is too high priced for the quality. yes im talking about the one in kazoo.

Every time I went in there, those guys tried to sell me stuff I didn't want or need, and chastised me for going against GHS as "THE" best string ever. So yeah, I'm going to lump all of them into that unfortunately. It's sad that another local music store went under, but the staff certainly had a little bit to do with it.

If you were selling the Fender at GC, they could only offer you half of what the Hollywood store would sell it for. That's why I try to shy away from selling anything to a retail store.

I've always wanted to make a trip to Elderly! It's a bit of a drive, but I might do that on a nice spring day. If gas prices remain low that is.

I drive there from Dearborn. You're closer than I am, give it a go. Now is a great time, because the MSU undergrads are just discovering that they don't have enough $$ to get home for the holidays, so in the next week they'll be consigning their dads' old gear that they've been given to jam in their dorms with.

actually the staff had nothing to do with it going under. they were the ones trying to keep breathing life into it. the owner was the one that screwed the pooch

I wasn't saying the owner was completely blameless; I'm sure the staff did everything they could to keep it afloat. But that place did have a reputation among the musicians in town to usually steer clear of it, unless they had something you specifically wanted.

i was there all the time and never saw or heard anyone be like that to anyone unless it was someone they knew personally and were just screwing with them. although i think i probably know who the GHS pimp was lol

The last time I stepped in there was last November. I called on a Friday looking for a set of Schaller straplocks in gold for a bass that I was going to use for a show that Sunday. They had one set left; I asked if they'd hold them for me. The guy did say that they were closing, but I mentioned that I didn't know when I'd get there, so if they could still hold them, it would be appreciated. He said okay.

I show up Saturday around noon and head to the counter and wait while the two employees are chatting. After that, I told them I had something being held, to which the guy had no clue. Turns out they never held it for me, so I grabbed it off the shelf, paid and left.

Now to be fair, that particular guy could've gotten let go last year; like I said, I didn't step foot in there since then. But considering that 1. I still remembered that and 2. any time anyone's asked me for store advice, I usually say "Go to either Marshall's and talk to ______" or "Go to Guitar Center and talk to ______," that killed any repeat business Dillon's could've gotten from me.

i dunno.
:idk:
i know there were some staff changes, but not sure when. but as far as i know, the guys i know ive never known to be like that so...
:idk:

It could be as simple as a "too little, too late" thing, or more complex. I dunno either. But, my feelings for the store aside, it's still a shame when a local music store goes under.
