Members abecon5
I am in the market for a mesa bass amp. head and cab. what is "the industry standard"? Sorta like the recto is to guitarists. I am thinking the 4x10 and carbine or m-pulse600???
Members squish_man24
most people will either steer you in the Carbine or M-Pulse direction if you are looking for a Hybrid amp. If you are looking for an all tube, go for a 400 or 400+, seem to be fairly standard tube amps around these parts. As for the cabs, I've seen people with a 2x10 1x15 mesa setup, or the Powerhouse 1200 amp is also another one a lot of people like to use. 4x10's are great too... but 6x10's are better

Not knocking their gear, it's great stuff, but it is certainly not an industry standard.

Members In Absentia
I'm about to snag a Titan V12 in a few more weeks. One of the most tubey sounding hybrids I've ever played. I like it better than any of the m-Pulse amps I've ever played. Does a great rock tone.
Members Funkee1
Mesa is teh great sounding, but Mesa is also teh heavee!! I like the M-Pulse 600 head and the road ready cabs. Get a dolly tho....

Members abecon5
also what is the big diffference between all the mesa models. I wont be using distortion (if they even have a dirty channel that is) so really how different are the voices.???

Moderators ThudMaker Posted December 14, 2008 Moderators Share Posted December 14, 2008 also what is the big diffference between all the mesa models. I wont be using distortion (if they even have a dirty channel that is) so really how different are the voices.???The M-Pulse 600 can go from clean to slightly overdriven and has on board compressor, as well as a semi-parametric eq section. The WalkAbout (part of the Mpulse line) is 13 lbs, does not have the compressor. It does have an active semi-parametric eq section and tonally is a bit more aggressive than the M-Pulse 600. The BB750 has a basic eq section, no comp and is meant for Rock and Roll with its extra ability to get overdrive. The Carbine has a basic eq section, but does have a switch that allows 4 different eq curves to be selected to compliment the basic eq. It doesn't have much else, which is why it's the bottom of the Mesa line. I am an owner of both a Walkabout Scout 12 and a Mesa M-Pulse 600. I pair the M-Pulse 600 with a Genz Benz Neox-212T cab. It's good stuff. As for not being famous for bass gear, you do realize that Mesa started out making amps for bass? The guitar amps were not their original focus, although I'd say it was a good move for them to make a few.
Members nAmzrTakin
Go tubes dude. Mesa Bass rigs sound {censored}in beautiful. The rig I plan on ending up with is this: M-Pulse 600 Powerhouse 2x10 Powerhouse 115 Sex on wheels dude. Tubes are always best. The warm tone tubes give you for guitar is probably more vital for bass. Also Funkee1 is right about these things being {censored}in heavy. I have a 2x10 that weighs half again as much as my Hartke 115 Get a trolley jack or a roadie to cart this {censored} around. Happy Hunting
Members In Absentia
I don't think that Tubes are necessarily the end-all-be-all for Bass amps. I personally like hybrid designs myself, as I feel they are tighter, and aren't slouches in the warmth dept.

Members nAmzrTakin
That's not a tube rig. It's a hybrid. Yeah. But I can't realistically afford all tube. MY "realistic" wish list is M-Pulse. My ADVICE was to go tube. I can see I didn't word that very well.

Members georgestrings
I don't think that Tubes are necessarily the end-all-be-all for Bass amps. I agree with this - although I really like good all tube bass heads, I think that tubes are FAR more necessary for good guitar tone than they are for good bass tone... - georgestrings
Members georgestrings
I've been diggin' this cab lately: By georgestrings, shot with ViviCam at 2008-12-09 Currently, I'm pushing it with a Peavey T-Max, but I can see either an M-Pulse 600 or GBE 750 in my future... - georgestrings
Members nAmzrTakin
Once you have the M-Pulse, you won't want to go all-tube. I know I love it already. I played it when I was buying bass cabs. So does it have valve preamps or what, not really sure how "half tube" works
