Members slash81291
Hey, My rig at the moment is a Mark Bass LM2 (Just bought it and it is pretty awesome!), a Hartke VX410 which is probably going to go out for one of those ampeg 'classic' 410s. I want to basically use my LM2 as the base tone, add a Tech 21 VT pedal(charcter series) to basically cop some overdriven SVT tones on a budget. I want to run an EHX Bass Muff for some gnarlier fuzz. I also want a synth sound, and I will probably buy a bass microsynth. I have a second POG from my guitar rig that ill keep instead of selling to use with bass. And a boss TU2. Does this sound like a solid rig? Should I grab a compresser pedal? Advice?/alternatives?

Basically the VX has paper cones and they're {censored}. The XL & Transporters are about a quater more but have aluminium drivers that sound like creamed tits. A compressor never hurt anyone, Try a Boss CS-2 I have that on my wishlist:love:
Members 82Daion
Sounds like a decent collection of pedals, but I'd skip the compressor and use the money to upgrade to a better speaker cabinet, which is to say that I'd skip the Hartke VX or Transporter series. The XL stuff is OK, but the Transporter is nothing to write home about, having used one on a gig. To elaborate on the compressor aspect, you probably don't need it in a live situation unless you do a lot of tapping or slapping and need to manage the dynamics that those styles produce. If you're in that situation, I'd recommend splurging for a rack unit-most pedal compressors are inadequate.

Use the Pog together with the Big Muff. You should be able to pull some synth sounds.I've read on here that the Boss Synth pedal sucks...
Members collinwho
I agree with 82Daion. Take that LM2 to the local music store and try it out with some other cabs. I think you'll find that you can do better than the Ampeg/Hartke.

There are definately better out there, but for price and a decent construction they are way good. I use an XL115 and I love it. It's not a Mesa but I love it. I'd much rather buy an Avatar though. If it works for you though then,
Members nAmzrTakin
I'm hearing a lot about these Avatar cabs lately. I might take one for a spin soon see how they are. Which do you prefer Mesa's or Avatars. (I always compare to Mesas because they are the best I've played) Which one does your wallet prefer? Mesa is a much better product with a price to match. They're not really comparable, IMO.

Members slash81291
I was thinking of ditching the synth pedal, and the Rat and just using: Bass -> bass muff, VT pedal, POG, tuner -> amp Any suggestions on a cab for around $400? I am a guitarist (just dabbling in bass for recording/band practices), and I have had good experiances with their cabs, do you think their 4x10 would be a safe bet? A compressor never hurt anyone, Try a Boss CS-2 I have that on my wishlist:love: I'm going to have to disagree on the Hartke aluminum cones...they sound sterile and lifeless. I'd also look at something other than the Ampeg cab, personally. As mentioned...take your bass and LMII to the store and try out everything you can get your hands on. Anyways, to answer your original question... The bass muff isn't very good on bass. If you're dying for a big muff type of sound on bass, you're better off with a big muff modded for bass. There are a ton of kits out there, people willing to do the mod, or prebuilt kits. Guttermouth on this forum makes a great bass fuzz, and the BYOC kit is wonderful. I've heard good things about the GGG kit, but never used it...as well as the Bluebeard. I've never used the Tech 21 pedal you speak of, so I can't give you any advice on it. I will say that the Sans Amp Bass Driver was designed to be an SVT in a box, and since that's the sound you're looking to get out of it, you might want to check that out. I had much better luck with an EBS Valve Drive and my LMII, but they are not cheap. The Boss Microsynth is also pretty {censored}ty. I wouldn't even bother with it. If you need a synth sound, I'd go with EHX Micro Synth. I know it's more expensive, but you get what you pay for and the Boss isn't worth it. The POG and the TU-2 are fine though Compressor: Do you need one? I'd leave it out right now until you decide if you need one or not. A decent compressor isn't cheap either. A lot of people will recommend the Aphex, but keep looking. Try out the EBS Multicomp and the Demeter Opto Compulator before you buy any compressor pedal to know what you'd be missing out on should you purchase something else. Members slash81291
Okay, I am going to bite the bullet and go with an EHX microsynth. I was playing with some muffs, and I dont really like the way they fit in the mix live, I think my RAT would work better, so Ill run the RAT(keeley) and the VT for distortion/overdrive tones. Ill check out a compressor after I splurge on a cab. So the peavey cab is a good buy?

A lot of people love Rats. Since they lose so much bottom end, I like them in a blender loop...that way you can dial some of your original cleans to get your low end back in tact. And...make sure you try out the microsynth before you drop that kind of change. Make sure it's something you like and will use. Don't just buy it because somebody thinks it sounds cool... Members guitargod0dmw
yeah of course, Im trying to track one down at the moment. You'd be surprised how many of these questions come up...and how much money is wasted because they heard that "so and so" uses one...or they didn't do any research and just bought a bunch of pedals not having a clue what they do or if they work well on bass. Also...you might want to hang on to the BF-2...I love mine on bass. Some people hate them though...
Members slash81291
Ill try it out, I have all these pedals left over from my guitar rig, and am just trying to get a solid bass rig together. Im going to start another thread about my cab search.
