So my Macbook came with iLife 2008 / iMovie '08 but I keep hearing other people say that 2008 sucks and iMovie-HD is better and apple made it available for download because it was better, blah, blah...:blah: :blah: Normal Macspeak...

So what's the deal? What's the difference? I have been using iMovie 2008 to edit band videos and other stuff but there are a few things I want to do that I cannot figure out how to do. Is there a good chance iMovie-HD does those things or does more? Better?

Or do I just not know enough about using iMovie 08?

There are very few things that HD does that 08 can't do, bit there is a lot that 08 can do that HD can't do.

What kind of stuff are you trying to do that you can't seem to figure out?

The only reason I use iMovie 08 is to encode to YouTube format. iMovie HD is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy better for actual editing. Apple actually had iMovie HD available for free download the day they released iMovie 08. I think they knew there was going to be a backlash if iMovie HD disappeared.

The main thing I want to do and can't figure out after sitting through the many well put together videos on the Apple support site, is to split the audio and video. When I used a PC to do this (using Pinnacle Studio) it was the default layout. That way the music would not be interrupted but I could change the video scene. I recorded a Christmas concert Sunday afternoon and there are a few places I want the sound to keep playing and be able to show alternate video or still images without interrupting the audio.

I hated 08, it wouldn't even let me split the video file into chapters for the DVD. (And no, setting chapters at fixed 5 minute intervals is NOT useful!).

Went back to the old version (yeah, free download available after people complained about 08 so much), and I'm happy again.

For splitting chapters in 08, I do it in iDVD when I am setting up the disk.

Doesn't that only offer you fixed intervals though? As in, chapter mark every five minutes etc.? Can you manually set them in the right spots, e.g. at the beginning of the songs at a show?

I have only done it a few times, but the tutorial says you can drag manual chapter marks to wherever you want them.

Quicktime can do this. Assuming you ave the full version, you can open the file you want the audio from in QT and use the export control to save only the audio as a standalone file. Alternately, you can do the same thing in iMovie 08 using the Export to Quicktime feature under the Share tab. Then just pull the audio into your clip and duck the audio on each video clip.

This is a little easier in HD, but neither is nearly as easy as Final Cut, so if you find yourself doing a lot of it, it might be worth looking into FC Express...

I was looking at FC on the shelf in the local Apple store the other day. But this is getting as bad as wanting Bass Gear. There is always something a little better or that costs just a little more....

But it makes your life so much easier. I've never used express, but from what I've seen, it has all the features you need. I had to cut a couple news stories for broadcast in iMovie HD. Ugh. Screw an edit up and I had to start part of the project over again.

IMO, video editing is annoying in that if you don't have the right software or gear, the workarounds are annoying and difficult, if not impossible. But drop some coin and voila! Nice and easy. :)

So how did it feel?

Actually on my desk right now is my Macbook and a Dell Latitude D830. At home I have a Cyberpower PC that I customized for movie editing and sound recording, and the macbook's simplicity beats them both. I am still learning a bit and not a full fanboi, but I definitely like the Mac movie editing better than any of the many PC products I own or have tried.

Oh, but one thing you might keep in mind - Final Cut Studio can handle multi-cam editing where you can time-align up to 16 camera clips and just click on each one as you want to switch to it, just like a producer in a live TV studio. This is how Fox manages to make an entire episode of 24 in under a week.

I don't think I'll ever go that far... My Christmas list is getting waaaay bigger than my "present for self" budget!!! For FC express will my standard macbook (black one) run it okay? Will I need to upgrade RAM?

In iMovie HD, use the "Extract Audio" function. I forget which menu it's under, but it's an option under one of the main menus. This way you can edit volume throughout the video and stuff. This should also give you an audio file independent of the video file.

Felt like I was being a pompous, ignorant ass throwing out the "buy my product instead" without really having paid much attention to the original post. I think I've achieved the Macboi troll pretty decently! ;)

As for Mac's. I've been meh on them since I was installing/supporting them along with Unix and Windows in 1994. They've always been kind of meh for me. OSX hasn't really ever impressed me. About the only thing I've really been interested in is the iLife package as it seems like some reasonable software at a pretty damn cheap price. Problem is, I could always build a PC for a cheaper price. That and I've really only ever had a couple problems with PC's, both my fault on buying poor quality products.

These days, the budget for computers is all but gone and any cash we can set aside for it is for upgrades to my main system which will likely always be a PC since it's for gaming and I don't feel like shelling out for a Mac Pro just to get an actual desktop separate from the monitor that I can put whatever graphics card in I care to.

Sorry, didn't mean to tangent off, just a funny troll since it was right there ;) PC guy humor?

you have 1 gb or 2 gb of ram? 2gb would be best, or ev en 4gb if you can swing it.

More of my Welcome to Apple marketing... Just like a PC... If you upgrade and keep buying more software, it can do amazing things!!!! :poke:

EDIT: here is what I have:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook

Model Identifier: MacBook4,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 3 MB

It's more for operating capacity. My Macbook Pro has 2 GB and I run final cut Studio on it, however, multi-cam editing and video rendering are really out of my capabilities since they just lag like mad on 2gb. Also, I have worked with uncompressed HD in the past - not fun with less than 4gb...

That said, I have seen quite a few people run Logic, Final Cut and Photoshop on 1gb computers, so it is entirely possible, just not recommended.

That'll handle Express. How much free HD space do you have?

Just under 100GB free...

'At'll do 'er.

You just need about 20GB of scratch disk space to keep it running cleanly when you do rendering. Your specs are actually pretty good. My MBP is 2.4 GHz with 2gb of 667mhz ram. I added a 160 gb 7200 RPM HD, and I'll be bumping it up to a 320gb @ 7200 just as soon as I can afford it (it was going to be my Christmas gift to myself, but then my GBE 600 got stolen...).

I think your system will do just fine with Express, as-is. :thu:
