Members vmanmurph
My bass player recently has been having issues with the type of string he uses. He currently plays flatwound strings and I have told hime that he should try roundwound strings. He then told me that they tear his fingers up really bad. Can any of you guys recommend a roundwound string that you use that doesn't cut up your hand that I can recommend to him? Brand and gauge too! Thanks Frank P.S. Is there such thing as a half roundwound?
Members s4001
There are halfwounds. Halfwounds and flats are expensive compared to regular rounds. Practice and calouses should take care of the finger issues. Nothing but time can do that.
Members nAmzrTakin
Tell your bass player to fix his own {censored}in bass. He sounds like a {censored}. Or a n00b. Roundwounds only tear up your fingers if you haven't been playing for long and you don't practice. Tell him to man up.
Members bnyswonger
Tell him to man up. +1,000 If you can't handle rounds, you're worthless and weak. He might just prefer the sound of flats, though. If he's afraid of of a little discomfort for a few days, you're better off axing him now.
Moderators Kindness Posted December 17, 2008 Moderators Share Posted December 17, 2008 There are people that have allergic reactions to the composition used for certain strings. If that is what's tearing his fingers up, it is worth experimenting with nickel plated, steel, different brands, etc. If he's just being a wuss, I don't know what to say other than . Lots of people are allergic to nickel. No one really has trouble with stainless steel.
Members guitargod0dmw
No one really has trouble with stainless steel. Unless he's a weeny...SS would really tear up with fingers. Is he using stainless strings now? That might be the culprit. They are much tougher than nickel strings. But either way, he should deal with it for a few weeks and build up his callouses...unless it's a genuine medical reason as mentioned above. Members dDigitalPimp
stainless strings seem to beat up my fingers worse than nickel strings. i would have him get a set of nickel roundwound strings and throw them on there when he has some time to practice for like an hour for a few weeks as opposed to stringing up the new ones the day before a 4 hr gig. stainless have a brighter sound usually and i liked them when i had them on one of my basses but i played close to a 4 hr gig after trying them out and by the last three songs of the night i was fretting with my middle finger for root notes instead of my pointer and using a pick. Members nAmzrTakin
Don't get me wrong. If there's a medical reason he can't play a certain type of string then look for other types of string to use. It sounds to me like he's a {censored}. It takes a man to play a bass, or at least a chick that's hard as nails. Maybe your "Bass player" should cut back on his moisturising regime and harden the {censored} up. Members nAmzrTakin
The fact that he wasn't man enough to ask us himself tells me it's time for a new bass player. I know I came off as a prick here, but honestly it's rediculous for a grown man to complain about sore fingers. If he's a young guy well then hell. Every single person here got sore fingers the first few weeks when we very first picked up the bass. It's not that bad and when the calluses come it goes away. Members Ender_rpm
DR Hellborg signatures- They have a thicker winding, and are very easy on the fingers, They have kind of a unique sound though, very clear with astrong fundamental and even response, which threw me off when I first tried em. They're great on my Jazz, but I prefer SS or Nickel wounds on my P (SB2)

I have this same issue. Stainless is rough on my girlie fingers - Nickel is much more comfortable to use. If he hasn't been playing long - he just needs to put in the time to get the callouses going.
