What the heck kills skunks?

When we got home tonight we smelled skunk, unfortunately not that unusual. When I went in the house it got worse. I was sure the dogs did not smell this morning when we left. (1 dog has been sprayed many times.) I was afraid a skunk somehow got in the house, I searched, no skunk. I looked outside the house, and found a dead skunk about 3 feet from the house. Its head was a little tore up, not too bad though. I was able to spot 3 areas where it sprayed and 2 depressions where it had melted the snow. There were no obvious signs of a fight.

So, what the heck kills skunks.

A local hunting forum thinks it was an owl. I think that is probably it, we have a few large owls that hang around our house quite often.

An owl wouldn't give the skunk a chance to spray. The skunk wouldn't see it coming. Nor would an owl hunt down something as large as a skunk. Also you didn't say it was eaten, you said it's head was messed up and it was dead. An owl would have killed and eaten at least a good noticeable portion of it.
