Honestly, most people here are just gonna tell you not to concentrate on it and just your hand use whichever finger comes naturally.

So that's what I'm gonna tell you, too.

Just use whatever finger your hand wants to start with.

I use 3 fingers, and it is pretty random. I have no Idea what I start with, and would probably eff-up if I thought about it. I would guess I start with whatever finger is next. I think I start songs with my middle unless it is the B, then it might be my index. IDK, I don't think about it.

OT, if I think about all my left hand finger mutes, I screw up big time.

I use three fingers, my thumb, and my index finger's fingernail (at times), so I use whatever feels right and makes sense. If you "overthink" which finger you start with it might become a barrier to your natural style.

I never professed to know anything, though. :p

so..this is pretty confusing, since i come from some guitar and learned to keep the motion going (downstroke - upstroke) and imagined that it will be similar here..like I=down and M=up (or viceversa) and if you start with one.. you have to keep going like that and the finger you started with has to be plucking at every new measure bar... you get what i mean

not having a determined finger to start with and a continuous alteration sounds chaotic (don't mean to insult)

No offense taken. I also come from guitar, and I've put away the pick. I really don't think what finger you start with matters unless you find yourself tying your fingers in knots. It took me less than a month to get comfortable with the finger thang, and it all feels natural on the bass now. I ever prefer my fingers to the pick - by far. You get more tonal control, more feel, and a better bass sound overall.

You've got to "think" bass, not "think" guitar. When in doubt, just stick to your index finger for most things, and come in with your middle for other things. Then again some songs call for the pick......

But, then again, that's just me. Merry Xmas!

It doesn't matter to me. I just go from one finger to the other, unless the particular riff I'm playing is easier a different way. Like if I go from the A string to the E string quickly it might be easier to use the same finger 2x in a row depending on what comes afterwards. I concentrate on my left hand more and my right seems to take care of itself.
