Members Goofball Jones Posted December 25, 2008 Members Posted December 25, 2008 Ever know a lot about a movie, but never actually saw it? For instance, I know a lot about Cassablanca, but never saw it. I know about Rick, and Ingrid Bergman and their lines. I know that he never really says "play it again Sam" in the movie. I've seen clips of the famous scenes like "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" and Rick and Ilsa's goodbye. But I've NEVER sat down and actually watched the movie from beginning to end. Anyone else have a movie like that? Where you can talk about it and catch the cultural references to it, but never really saw it?

So very un-good. I go to sleep as a way of dealing with getting fidgety.

Members GregHENDRICK Posted December 26, 2008 Members Posted December 26, 2008 Weird thread. Mostly because I talk about this a lot, haha. I have a part time job at Movie Trading Company here in Dallas. I do know a lot about movies I've seen, but I also know a ton about the ones I haven't. One night a guy walked in and asked one of the other guys "what's that movie with Wesley Snipes in prison" and I said "Undisputed" before he could finish the sentence. He said "the Boxing one, right?" and I said "yeah." And he smiled real big and said "Ain't that a good one?!?" and I said "never seen it." I absorb trivia. For instance, in Casablanca, when he said "This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship", that line wasn't in the script. It was recorded when they were doing the overdubs after the movie had been made. They came up with it on the fly. When, in reality, they're walking away quietly with their backs to the camera.

I didn't know our friendship ended months ago. Wow. Now I understand the "what does this guy want?" look I've been getting. I'm moving to Maryland and hanging with Hawkhuff!
Members Brother Mango Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 Why are you bustin' our chops? Casablanca? We should give you the for having watched it.
Members misterhinkydink Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 If you haven't seen a movie, you probably don't know much about it.

Funny, you are the second woman I've heard say this kind of thing. I wonder are the Star Wars and LOTR movies/novels really that testosterone driven, that you gals can't get into it? By way of comparison, my wife thought I would get into Chicago, and I think I would have rather hit myself in the head with a ball peen (sic) hammer for a couple of hours instead.

Moderators ThudMaker Posted March 24, 2009 Moderators Posted March 24, 2009 Ever know a lot about a movie, but never actually saw it? For instance, I know a lot about Cassablanca, but never saw it. ........It's probably one of my favorite all-time classics. Get the colorized version, if the B&W is a hindrance for you. It's a great show and well worth the time to watch it. Good story line and it's also very romantic in a classic sense, so you can score some brownie points with Mrs. Goofball if you watch it together.
Members frunobulax Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 Get the colorized version, if the B&W is a hindrance for you. no no no no no no get the B&W version and watch it the way it was made. the lighting and the shadowing and the effects were all made for a B&W medium. 'gambling...i'm shocked.' it's reputation is well deserved.
Moderators Kindness Posted March 24, 2009 Moderators Posted March 24, 2009 If it weren't one of the finest movies ever made you might have a point.
Members Brother Mango Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 If it weren't one of the finest movies ever made you might have a point. I just can't win. Well, Bogart is definitely an actor I like. Maybe I'll find the time to see what's what. It's his gangster movies that I really like.
