Does anyone own a Tour 450 head???

It's a current Peavey product - I suppose I *could've* been a bit clearer, but if you owned one, you'd probably already know what I was talking about...

If someone were to google "tour 450", the first 6 results are all related to the Peavey bass head.

From having a look around I'm assuming the Tour range replaced the Max range (even though there is still a Max range is appears that they only make combos) and if that is the case they wouldn't have replaced it without making it better.

I haven't had a Tour amp but I had a Max 450 for a few years and that thing was pretty cool. Really powerful and like all Peavey stuff it'll run forever.

If that logic is anything to go by I think the Tour 450 is gonna be a decent amp.

Sorry I don't have any experience of the amp but I guess experience of Peavey counts for something?

I've owned two Peavey Firebass 700's (the old version of the 'tour' amps) and they were solid, heavy, and super dependable. Nothing special about the tone but they didn't sound 'bad'. Just not a super flexible EQ section. Loud though.

I played the 700 in GC for about a half hour and I was impressed with the tone. Too many knobs for me but it sounded really good. What are you playing right now George?

I have a pair of Peavey T-Max heads - one's in my gigging rack with the wireless receiver and tuner, and my backup/rehearsal T-Max is in an SKB 2 slot ATA rack case... One T-Max is 550 watts, the other 500 - and both provide way more volume than I need... My thinking is, *if* the Tour 450 sounds better than my T-Max heads, I'll trade one of them for it - at 450 watts, I'm sure it'll be plenty loud enough for my needs...

I'm hoping to make a slight tonal improvement at no cost - atleast 'til I can afford the amp I want... That short list is:

Mesa M6 Carbine

Mesa M-pulse 600

GBE 750

GBE 600

Any one of those 4 heads will work well with my current gear...

The only downside to this trade is that the Tour 450 only goes down to 4 ohms - but I'm thinking that if it does sound better than my T-Max's, I'll stick it in the gigging rack, and pair it up with the Powerhouse 610 - and still be good to go... My Peavey 210 and 410 cabs are both 4 ohm - so I can still drive them both with the T-Max I'm keeping... and, if I play a couple of large outdoor gigs I'm anticipating this summer(well over 5,000 people), I can slave the T-Max from the Tour 450, and run 210+410+610 cabs for a rig of doom - if I feel like it...

Yeah, I briefly owned a Firebass 700, and gigged a Mark VIII for awhile - I ended up preferring the tone of the Mark VI over either of them, and just used a JDI MK3 to DI - that setup worked pretty well for me...

I would be surprised if the tour sounded better than the T-Max. The T-Max was part of Peavey's professional bass amp line at the time, and was considerably more expensive than the Tour series of amps currently are. They targeted a different market. I currently own a T-Max, and owned a Firebass 700 in the past, and I think the Max sounds MUCH better.

I agree that the T-Max sounds much better than the Firebass 700 - my thinking is, the T-Max has been around awhile, and it's *possible* that Peavey is building a better preamp and EQing section since the T-Max production days... I'm definitely planning on A/Bing them with my cab and bass, and if the Tour 450 doesn't sound better, I'm under no obligation to take it...

Thanks for the input,

Something I'm wondering about the Tour 450 - does the DI outlet require phantom power from the board, and is it a Pre-EQ send??? I *think* the answer is yes to both questions, but I'm still looking into it...

The DI is definitely a buffered uneffected pre-EQ signal. The DI certainly works with phantom power (in case you lose power to your head), but, based on the manual, I don't think it works without. It makes sense that since it is a failsafe provision, it shouldn't be switched on/off and should simply be always set to run on phantom power.

I think you're right...
